STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Driver Refresher Course Icy Roads Cause Accidents James Jansen of the McHenry Senior Citizens club announces another driver refresher course scheduled to begin Thursday, March 29, at 9:45 a.m. in the McHenry city hall Council chambers. The second session will be Thursday, April 5, and the third and final session in this series will be Thursday, April 12. The second and third sessions will begin at 10:00 a.m., and all sessions will last until noon. All senior citizens having birthdays between April 12 and the latter part of June, and who will have to be renewing their drivers' licenses, should take advantage of this series. It entered the northbound lane, where it collided with a northbound auto driven by Jacqueline E. Mortimer, 4118 East drive. Ms. Cusackt Ms. Mortimer and a passenger in the Cusack vehicle, Christina L. Cusack, 3005 N. Oakwood drive, were all taken to Memorial hospital in Woodstock by the Wonder Lake Rescue squad, where they were treated and released. A passenger in the Mortimer auto, Evona C. Mizialka, 7719 Beach drive, was taken by the Rescue squad to McHenry hospital, where she was also treated and released. A Wonder Lake man escaped injury early Sunday morning when his car struck a utility pole. Frank R. Tetzlaff, 5905 Wonder Woods drive, told police he was westbound on McCullom Lake road, when he lost control of his vehicle due to the snow-covered road. The car left the roadway, striking the electrical pole. No injuries were reported in a Iwo-car crash on River road, reportedly caused by water on the pavement. Elaine J. Heinsohn, 1404 N. Park street, told Sheriff's police she was northbound on River road, when her vehicle hit a stretch of water on the pavement, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. The car collided with a southbound vehicle driven by Allen R. Holmquist of Glendale Heights, which was also driving through the water at the time. A McHenry man suffered facial cuts and bruises late Saturday night when his car went out of control. Roy R. Okeson, 4315 Sioux lane, told police he was eastbound on Bull Valley road, rounding a curve, when his car slid off the road on the snow and ice, striking a gate, fence and evergreen trees. RICHARD W. NAGEL Richard W. Nagel, 77, 4714 Cumberland circle, Whispering Oaks, died Monday, March 26, at McHenry hospital. He was born July 17, 1901 in Germany, the son of William and Anna Englegardt Nagel, and lived in the area for ten years, having come here from Chicago. The deceased was the chief dispatcher for the Goss, Miehle and Dexter company in Chicago. He is survived by his wife, the former Rosa Albrecht, to whom he was married March 27,1926; by one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Eleanor) Kehr from Mount Prospect; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, William, and a sister, Mrs. Adam (Margaret) Hager, both of Florida. Visitation was scheduled for Tuesday, March 27, from 3 to 9 p.m . at the Peter M. Justen and Son funeral home. Services will take place Wenesday, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Reverend Kenneth GranquisP of Mount Prospect officiating. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery. McHenry. ELLEN A. MCDONAGH Ellen A. McDonagh, 82, of 3606 W. Clover, McHenry, died Friday, March 23 at Carestoel Professional Care center. She was born in Chicago, June 7. 1896, the daughter of was private. sUi viving are one daughter, Mrs. Robert A. (Jean) Decker, Wonder Lake; six grand­ children and four great­ grandchildren. Visitation took place Monday from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Peter M. Justen and Son funeral home. Services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral hoftie, and burial took place in the Waldheim cemetery, Forest Park, 111. Memorials may be made to the Wonder Lake rescue squad. EARL P. KOCH Earl Paul Koch, 75, of 410 S. Barrington road. Wauconda. died in McHenry's Carestoel Professional Care center. Mr. Koch resided at 1108 River Terrace drive, McHenry, his summer residence since 1938, and permanent residence since 1946. He gave private musfcal instrument instruction in the area for twenty-five years. He was a lifetime member of the Medinal Temple, a member of the Most Worshipful Grande Lodge 209, Chicago, of the William B. Warren Accordia Lodge, and a fifty-year member of the Chicago Federation of Musicians. He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Thomas; two daughters, Mrs. Douglas (Denise) MacBeath and Mrs. Joyce Ries; four grand­ children; three great­ grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Eleanor Hilliard. Arrangements were handled by the George R. Justen and Son funeral home. There was no visitation, and interment A Wonder Lake woman was injured in a one-car rollover accident early Saturday morning. Lois J. Wenhel, 5622 Woodlawn drive, was reportedly northbound on Ringwood road, when her car skidded off the roadway and rolled over, finally coming to rest in an upright position. Ms. Wenhal was taken to McHenry hospital by the Wonder Lake Rescue squad after the crash. Two persons were injured and a McHenry man ticketed following a three-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon. According to police, a vehicle driven by Vincent S. Simonson, 518 N. Kent road, was northbound on Route 31, when it struck the rear of another vehicle travelling northbound driven by Gail P. O'Brien, 4209 W. Ponca. The O'Brien vehicle was pushed forward, striking a third northbound vehicle, driven by Christine M. Kern, 3911 Kane avenue. Simonson and Ms. O'Brien were taken to McHenry hospital by the McHenry Area Rescue squad for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision. Simonson was cited for. failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Steven A. Nierman, 808 Regner road, was injured Friday morning when his car slid off the road. Nierman was driving eastbound on Lincoln road when his car left the pavement, striking a fence and several trees. He was taken to McHenry hospital by the Johnsburg Rescue squad. A Wonder Lake driver was not injured Friday night after her car went out of control. 4r Drewe M. Christensen, 3001 Chestnut drive, was travelling southbound on E. Wonder Lake road when her vehicle went out of control, striking a fence. Patrick and Agnes Maher, and lived in McHenry for the past nineteen years. The deceased was preceded in death by her husband, John P. McDonagh, in January, 1970. Surviving are three sons, Bernard of San Diego, Michael of McHenry, and John P., Jr., of Seattle, Wash.; fourteen grandchildren and five great­ grandchildren. Mrs. McDonagh was a member of the St. Clara Court 659 of the National Catholic Society of Foresters, McHenry, and had been a Forester for sixty-five years. Visitation took place Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Peter M. Justen and Son funeral home. Funeral Mass was offered at 11 a m Monday at St. Patrick's church, and burial was in the churchyard cemetery. FLORA AHLGRIM Flora Ahlgrim, 85, from Wonder Lake, died Saturday, March 24, at Memorial hospital for McHenry county, Wood­ stock. She was born April 17, 1893 in Quincy, 111., the daughter of Edward and Lydia (Hardy) Schaeffer. She lived in this area since 1956, having come here from Chicago. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in January, 1956. GRANGER SMITH Granger Smith, 87, formerly of McHenry, and more recently of Fullerton, Calif., a former superintendent of the Milwaukee Road, died March 18, in Wilshire Convalescent home, Fullerton. He was born June, 8, 1891, in McHenry. Mr. Smith was educated in the Elgin public schools. He and his wife, Marjorie, lived in Elgin most of their nearly sixty years of marriage, moving to California in October, 1974. Mr. Smith was a life member of the Elgin Moose Lodge and the Masonic Lodge of Elgin. He leaves three cousins in McHenry, Miss Maud Granger, Mrs. Robert A. (Fanny) Thompson and Frank Johnson. Survivors include his wife; a grandson, Jeffrey G. Smith of San Mateo, Calif., and a brother, George Smith, Elgin. He was preceded in death by one son, Navy Cmdr. George Gage Smith, and two sisters, Amy and Villa Smith. Masonic services were held in Hope Chapel, Forest Lawn Memorial Park cemetery, Cypress, Calif. Burial was in Ascension Masoleum in Cypress, with Reverend Lee Cunningham of Valencia United Methodist church of­ ficiating. A letter from Dr. Joseph Cronin, state superintendent, explained the approval which resulted from the required submissions and reports. Funding is furnished by federal funds provided by Public Law 94-142, Swartzloff reported, and has been in effect since 1967. To meet the requirements of the regional superintendent of education, the board approved a list of textbooks adopted and in use at the local schools during the current school year. The requirement is for new adoptions, but the district has submitted a complete .list. Judges for the April 14 annual school board election, compiled by Michael Kelly, business manager for the district, were approved by the board to be paid at a rate of $29 each. Judges at McCullom Lake and Lakemoor will be shared with District 15. At other precincts, each school district will employ its own judges and the number will be increased from 4 to 5 as, recommended by educational authorities. The board routipely ap­ proved continued service contracts for a number of teachers and four were listed for tenure: Steven Polodna, Jean Natoli, D. Jeffrey Petit, and Michael Reynolds. Teachers who received second- year contracts were listed as Thomas Carl, Ronald Dale, Kenneth Mueller, Karen Hexton, Joel Smith, Gerald Schmelcher, Rex Hester and Kathryn Reimann.
