YOUR McHenry Pisindealer -0170 Incredible Elizabeth Spooks MCC Students The Incredible Elizabeth, through psychic powers, finds the "Cube' (The following is one in a series of stories on subjects of general interest written by McHenry County college students from the McHenry area.) (by Kay Scolaro) On May 12, Alvira, the resident "ghost" of the Woodstock Opera House, will have to share her spotlight with another form • of psychic phenomenon. For on that date, "The Incredible Elizabeth" will step on stage along with her manager, Robert Ewers, and together, they will demonstrate feats of "areas of the mind". This performance will include demonstrations of her amazing memory abilities as well as her talents as a mentalist, psychic, palm reader and interrupter of handwriting. As a sneak preview of this show, the McHenry County college Journalism class traveled to the Chicago home of Elizabeth to be shown a presentation of her skills. The students and their instructor, Joseph Longmeyer, climbed into their borrowed van with pencils and wits sharpened and proceeded on their fantastic journey. Arriving at her darkened and shuttered home, pleasantries and introductions were quickly finished, and Elizabeth began her routine of amazing deeds. But first Ewers, using hyp nosis, put her in a light trance, to "help her relax and key in". She began witlfc a demon stration relating the day of the week upon which any date fell. This may seem a rather small wonder in itself, but Elizabeth did not confine herself to just this century. She requested students to select dates from the 19th century also. A long and intricate sheet of dates and their corresponding days of the week was held by a guest who related Elizabeth's accuracy each and every time. Then Elizabeth, large blue eyes peeping through a mane of stylish blonde, curly hair, continued with a display of her memory. The class provided verbally 50 single digit num bers to Elizabeth, which Ev- vers chalked on a blackboard concealed from her. Elizabeth was able to totally recall all 50 numbers and later, before the s p u r g e o n s McHENRY MARKET PLACE Perfect for Easter or Graduation Dressed Down byt^vi's Panatekr Casual yet elegant in a blazer and pant which are the perfect compliment to any man's wardrobe, Step out in style with Levi's® Panatela® LEVFS RANA7ELA spofttsweah egg Blazer Reg. $55. Next Elizabeth, clad in fashonable clothing, not the expected garish turban or profuse abundance of beads and rings, showed the class her mathematical abilities. She very quickly and efficiently solved a box tape of math equation which, "according to the writings of Martin Gardner, is the hardest type of break". Ewers explained Elizabeth was the "first person we know who can do it.'* The class, at this point, was impressed by her abilities in m a t h e m a t i c s a n d memorization because these were both areas that students were familiar with, although on a much simpler basis. But 28- year-old Elizabeth was just beginning. She went upstairs with a guest where she was blind folded with two scarves. Meanwhile, Ewers asked a student to choose an object in the living room. A small plastic puzzle cube was what Steve Paterson discretely picked up and handled for some moments. It was replaced on the coffee table and the blind folded Elizabeth returned. She then asked the class to "think Directions". She spun and swayed but finally managed to find the coffee table. Yet, she sighed and fluttered her hqnds, projecting a sense of confusion. She then stressed that the students again think directions, "right, left, up, down". All of a sudden, she asked for the students nearest her to give her their hands. This done, she suddenly let go, then reached down and unerringly selected the cube, even though it was amid confusing paraphernalia such as a purse, bowls, glasses and even a statue. Looking exhausted, but also elated by1 ^he experience, Elizabeth sat tyith the students and discussed'the process by which she found the object. She says that she "gets impulses of directions almost as if she is compelled by energy". She added she "knows there is power" but the she can't be more specific. Elizabeth, saying she "considers myself an en tertainer", agreed to read Longmeyer's palm. After she finished, the MCC Journalism instructor verified her reading as "provable historical facts" of his life. Her future predic tions will await Longmeyer's confirmation. She also took a student's handwriting and did a quick analysis: She explained because she was performing that evening that she would not do any psychic readings for she "did not have time for a period of renewal" to regenerate her energies. She did discuss her once-a-month guest spot on Crystal Lake's radio station, WIVS, with Mai Bellairs, where she does psychic readings for telephone callers. She ex plained that she just needs a "presence at the other end of the phone" - that she almost prefers not to have questions. She also stated that she "isn't able to read for everyone". Anyone who would like to see this interesting woman per form her special type of show, make reservations now for May 12 at the Woodstock Opera House.
