Earn Speech Honors PA(.K 11 -PI .\IM>KAI.KH - FRIDAY. MARCH 30,1979 Library Trustees \ Louise Hipwell At Leadership Institute Louise Hipwell, a volunteer member of the board of directors of the McHenry- Nunda Public Library district, attended the Illinois Library Trustees association's Leadership Institute for Trustees which was held in Springfield from March 25-29. This Institute, which was funded by a federal L.S.C.A. grant, was the culmination of a series of special workshops dealing with various aspects of Illinois Library Trusteeship. Those who completed this effort are not only trained in the "how to's" of library trusteeship, but also serve as a select cadre of Illinois library people who are trained to train others. Being able to serve one's community's information needs is a very special privilege and Louise Hipwell of the McHenry-Nunda Public Library district is now in the forefront of library trusteeship development. Name Chairmen For T&C "Remember When" c Suzanne Vadasz, left, instructor of Speech at MCC, is shown with students, Ami Wilson, McHenry; Bev Kimball, Woodstock; Dee Ahem, Cary; and Beth Elwood, Huntley. Five McHenry County college Speech students cap tured two first place trophies at a speech tournament at William Rainey Harper college in Palatine earlier this month. The five women competed against - other beginning speakers from Elmhurst college, Elgin Community college, Central YMCA Community college, Triton college and Harper. The MCC students par ticipated in Beginning Poetry Interpretation and Beginning Public Speaking and won first place in both areas. Bev Kimball, Woodstock, won a first place trophy for her poetry program, "Storms of Life", and a certificate of participation for her speech, "To Eat or Not to Eat", which dealt with school food ser vices. The MCC students also took the top three positions in public speaking. Dee Ahem, Cary, brought home a first place trophy for her speech, "Anorexia Nervosa". Beth Elwood, Huntley, won the second place trophy for her speech on Saudi Arabia, "Space Age Technology in an Ancient Civilization". Amy Wilson, McHenry, earned the third place trophy for her speech, "Hatha Yoga", in which she used visuals, music, and herself doing the postures. Lu Propeck, Woodstock, earned a certificate of partic ipation for "Rock Collecting- Hobby and Friendship Maker". Suzanne Vadasz, instructor of Speech at MCC, is over whelmed by her students' accomplishments. But she stresses that these speeches were not developed for winning but as growth experiences in the classroom. The contest was more of a gathering of people and ideas where mutual sup port and learning prevailed over prizes. Stable Management Course At College Managing a stable and caring for horses is a full time joL for some people. But the novice who keeps horses for a hobby may need some instruction. Because of the season, the instructors will also be able to show care of foals. Areas of instruction will include physical exam of a mare; checking for parasites; equine anatomy; vaccinating procedures; breaking a horse and stable management.
