PAGE 20 - PLAINDF.ALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 30.1979 Comments I can't believe a town of swimming pool. size not having a community K Definitely not at Petersen Park. A.P. Freund field or McCracken field. We need an outdoor pool right now! A park program using school gyms, etc., must be devised. The city should reevaluate its priorities. They accepted federal funds for Petersen park so they can dance to their tunes. Building, maintenance and security costs are high. I prefer a pool within the city, so children can walk and not be on heavily travelled Route 31. Considering the condition of the Fox, I believe a pool would be more important for a larger number of people. Without an increase of revenue by some tax, how do we staff and maintain any of these proposals? Use the money to pave streets and upgrade off-street parking. Petersen Park is within walking distance for so few people. A pool is necessary since the river is usually unswimmable and the location should be in town, perhaps Freund field. If there must be a building I would like to see racquetball courts included. I am against the Petersen Park location. Some revenue sharing funds should go to youth organizations. What will be in this community building? If this community building isn't built, will the schools allow the public to use their gyms? If so, the building isn't necessary. This building should be useful and enjoyable to all age groups-not one dominating group. This community definitely needs planning for park programs and policies. Clean up the parks that we already have and establish a parks and recreation program with qualified direction and director. Community Building Survey Results The city of McHenry is seriously contemplating construction of a community building in Petersen Pork, its cost to be paid for, in part, by Revenue Sharing fun ds. Council members are anxious to learn the views of the public. For this reason the Plaindealer conducted man-on-the-street interviews. Based on comments received, the public is asked to respond to the following questions. 1. Would you like to see the city build a community building? Yes No 67 94 2. If you answered yes, do you have a preference on its location? Petersen Park 0 Nearer the heart of the city 0 3. Would you be interested in an outdoor pool? Yes El No 5 I v 4. If a choice is to be made, which would you prefer? Community Building Outdoor Pool Both 12 95 31 Total Responses 171 The location should be A.P. Freund field. I think a community building would be an asset, but a pool seems like a necessity. Why have an outdoor pod? We just spent $80,000 last year for a beach. There are too many places for people to meet Therefore, since our rivers and lakes are polluted, an outdoor pool would serve all ages. In order to keep our children and ourselves healthy, active and out of trouble, this city needs to start doing things for the young people of this community. Please, they have very little in this town! People say it will be used by non-McHenry people; what about Lakeland Park and Lakeland Shores? I don't swim, but I don't object to a swimming pod. Sidewalks are badly needed first. Living a Mode from Petersen park, I understand the transportation problem. We need a road on the east side of Lakeland Park, not a park nearer the heart of the city. Due to the rapid growth of McHenry, these facilities are badly needed for our children. Careful thought should be given to location. The co6t of a pool of any type is too costly. Too few people would use it. There are pods at the YMCA and schools to use. I have great concerns for funds, both operating and construction. The kids need a place to go. McHenry offers the kids very little. Please, get something going in the dty for the young. We older people will enjoy it just as much. If they do build it, federally fund it Whoever said the pool would not get enough use is wrong. It would be greatly used. to VI y more taxes for recreational areas for young people alize? A building in Petersen park only tends to alienate more McHenry citizens. Build in "town". Ifwe all had more respect for property, a building would be fine-destroy seems to be the word today. An outdoor pod and park programs are far more important than a building. Make use d schools for building requirements. No tax increase! Baloney! Any way you slice it funds come from some form of tax. Consider maintenance. Revenue sharing and grants can end. In no way, locate anything at Petersen park..It's too far out Build a pod first If finances allow, build both. I think a community pool would be an outstanding addition to the community. A community building is a fine idea, but nd until a sound park program is devdoped. A building with no program is absurd. Petersen park is too far out Kids would have to ride bikes on Highway 31 to get there. If money is available build a pod and a building. If funds are limited, build the outdoor pool first Activities in community building should include gymnastics, etc. No community building is needed. Schools and many other buildings are available. Build a pod. Put a pool in the center of <the dty (A.P. Freund fidd). Put baseball at Petersen park. We all ready have an inside pool at West caftipus. An outdoor pool is needed near the heart d the dty. If a choice must be made, we prefer a swimming pool. I doesn't matter so much where a pod is located, because it will never be close to everyone. I would object to the dty CHUCK special? ront END UGNN«nTS onanva»w,can RECEIVE {OFFER GOOD WITH FRONT END ALIGNMENT ONLYM ̂Itflll nuri Ml SMS ^MMUITNSi CHECK INCLUDES: POLLUTION REPORTS- Forecasts of pollution con centrations to advise the public of any adverse health effects due to air pollution will be issued on a daily basis for the Joliet area beginning April 1. The pilot program is being initiated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in cooperation with the Will County Health Department. EPA Director Michael Mauzy said the results of this program could deter mine the expansion of the system during this year to a number of other areas, in cluding Chicago and Cook county, Rockford, Peons, the Quad Cities and Springfield. You can arrange to donate kidneys after your death an Organ Donor Card, a "pocket-will" that can be carried on the person. Find out about the Organ Donor Program by writing to the Kidney Foundation d Illinois, 127 N. Dearborn, Chicago, 111., 60602. C O U R T H O U S E S Q U A R E S got no respect as s kid, either. They always made me take the family picture so I wouldn't be in 4 n n T buying more land to put in a pool when Petersen park is already city property. The pool should be in town, like at A.P. Freund fidd. A one-room set-up accompanying an outdoor pool with ping pong, checkers, chess, etc., available for rainy days is much more sensible than a large community building. A pod! But nd in Petersen park. We need streets repaired. Where are the city's priorities? How can you have a building with no program set up to use it? Other park programs deserve immediate attention. There isn't a baseball fidd with lights inside the city limits. Why qd use the McCullom Lake beach at Petersen park during the summer for bathing and the high school during the winter. Who is going to pay for this? What about vandals?" What about teen "gangs"? How many days could an outdoor pool be used in McHenry? It is a total waste d money . We need a community building. If it will raise our taxes too much, I vote no. If it must be built, it should not be at Petersen parte. It is not centrally located to let our children get there on their own. There is too much vandalism in that area anyway, as it is hard for our police to patrol. Put it somewhere in the heart d the city, where all out children have an equal chance d fair attendance. Hie money to be spent on a pool is tremendous for a 3- month facility. When West campus was being built, (me d the biggest selling points was that the town would have a pod. What happened? Apply the funds to repair the street damages. This will benefit every citizen. What other city has one? Consider maintenance, patrolling, upkeep in winter, etc. City has traffic problems, etc., to be considered first. If a community building or a swimming pod is built, it should be built in the city only. We need a pod in the center d town. Not in Petersen park. We need street lights and sidewalks. Where would money for future upkeep come from? A waste d money which could be used for other needs of the City d McHenry. Revenue sharing funds should be used to reduce dty taxes. The high school has a swimming pool. We senior dtizens find it difficult to meet taxes. What more would you like to load on us? Petersen park is a white dephant because transportation is needed to get to the park. Therefore, children must be driven to and from park. A pool or center at any location will require 24-hour security, maintenance, heating, cooling, lighting (inside and out), insurance, a matron and a life guard. For a few citizens' pleasure, it will cost all d the taxpayers a bundle. No pod. We are already limited in our sprinkling. A community building would only bring more vandalism. An outdoor pool requires 365 days a year attention and expense. We now have several community buildings. Let's think d our taxes first. To build and maintain it will cost tax money. I say NO! It would be too expensive and be vandalized. No more taxes. The cost d upkeep would be excessive. Past performance proves the city cannot control and supervise such a large enterprise. First take decent care d our present buildings. We need better streets, curbs and snow removal equipment. Too much vandalism, keep taxes down. Let's get streets and traffic problems worked out first A by-pass system to divert trucks and thru-traffic is needed. A pod would be wonderful. We're new in McHenry, a nice town with friendly people. We need more activities (indoor and out) for kids during the summer. An outdoor pod would be great. A community center should be for the benefit of the people, not only the inner dty, but the outlying communities as well (which is the future d McHenry). Build now, while .the cost is still affordable. 4. Put a pod at Petersen park, a community building in town. Who wants to drive all over to get to a community building. I fed it is important to find out where the money is coming from, before deciding to build it Put a building and pod together. The idea is a good one, but locate both the pool and the center near the heart of the dty. A community building with handball and paddleball would be great. A pod is most important Get a qualified staff to run it! Check out Cary Park district's community center. 1 think Petersen park is a mistake and I don't want to see the mistake expanded. I believe it might give our teens something to do and might encourage others to keep from getting into trouble. The project should be near the heart of the city so it can be policed. With these hoodlums roaming around, (me can't keep a mailbox or light in front d their house. Don't forget, free facilities for senior citizns. McHenry does ndhing for its senior citizens, the people who vote. My suggestion is use McCracken fidd for the pool and use East campus, Edgebrook and Junior high gyms for meetings and other get togethers. I would like to see a (dace for dancing and other things kids like to do. In other words, utilize the schools during the summer as youth centers. The spot chosen must have ample parking. I would like to see a pool at the City park. Take down the band shdter and fix up the tennis courts. How about a more important project for the city? a mini bus going through Whispering Oaks and McHenry proper. We have a senior citizen cento: and numerous bars. How about something for the younger people. It might cut down on the vandalism a bit, too! Build an outdoor pool near the heart of the city. Build an dympic size pool. It might be best at Freund fidd, with Petersen park a second choice. I can't believe McHenry is finally considering a pool. They needed one twenty years ago. There is a definite need for outdoor swimming facilities in this community. If we can also finance a community building, good! There are too many other buildings not being utilized to their capacity (schools, VFW, Moose, American Legion). Security would be a problem. People prefer outdoor pools. West campus never draws crowds. Build an outdoor pool near the heart of the city. I think $500,000 could be spent on more important projects. Hiere are enough public buildings to meet in now. We need a pod and recreation area. An outdoor pool should be located at Freund fidd. With all the school facilities available for evening meetings, a community building is a ridiculous frivolity. With our poor water, a pool is a necessity. Everyone knofes the purpose of the building is to provide a "monument". Build a pod, but nd in Petersen park. Vandalism there would be terrific and very costly and police would not be able to cope with it Petersen parte is inconvenient to get to without an auto. The pool should be within walking distance for many people. Locate an outdoor pool near the heart d the city. We have a roller rink, indoor pool and shows for the winter. I would like to see an outdoor pod at A.P. Freund park. There has been too little thought given to cost and future upkeep. The money should be spent on streets. Dreams and facts do not always mix. A pod-In town! Build a pool nearer the heart d the dty. Build a pool nearer the heart d the dty. Locate an outdoor pool on Center street, preferably. NO$ PETERSEN PARK! A pool should be centrally located. A.P. Freund fidd would be a good spd. We are new to the area and sure miss a public pool. I would hope the prices would be moderate. I would prder racquetball courts and an exercise room. How many residents go out of town for these sports? Cary has a beauty! A pod at A.P. Freund fidd. for the pool, have a season pass, so much money for each family. Check into Barrington Park district The pod should be centrally located, preferably in Freund field. Revenue sharing funds come from our taxes. They are not free! If we get a pool, daily adult rates should be $1, children fifty cents. Build a pod now, so it can be used this summer. Build it near the heart d the city where city residents can gd to it easily. ®OOKSo T/P~ Toe THRU \h FUNNYSIDE "How about that! Another book of memories by a guy who couldn't remember!"
