FAVOR JOHNSBURG SPORT CAMP (Continued from page 1) \ In other business, an update was given on high school and elementary construction and the school calendar was ap proved. Following a lengthy executive session, the board voted to expel one student for violation of the school's tobacco and smoking policy. A 4-2 vote kept another student, accused of miscon duct, in school. The majority of the membership felt this was in the best interest of the student. However, the vote hinges on parental approval for disciplinary Action and guidance counseling recom mended. Also changed the title of the current position of assistant to the president to associate dean for management information. The board also approved vice-president emeritus status to John Garrett as of July l, 1979. The April board meeting will be held Tuesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the board room on campus. IRWIN CASE UNRESOLVED (Continued from page 1) should be a two-year program for the gifted, noting that in the brief time that Tom was in high school he was stimulated and interested. He said that the prophecy that Tom would have behavior problems without special attention was self- fulfilling since there were no special programs and that he was now in a behavior modification program. He couldn't understand the problem with tuition required by the high school as he resided in both districts and paid taxes to both. And what was the precedent that would be set that the board wsa&>nNI<u*ie4. -aboi^,^",gpod education for the kids, in the district?" Irwin said they were disappointed, that the whole procedure is inappropriate. Irwin then asked if the board wanted to ask any questions of him or Dr. Duckers. David Cain, board president, said the board couldn't com ment because of the pending litigation. Irwin assented that the problem went beyond the scope of the Spanish class incident. During the past year they had employed a tutor for Tom. They would like to work together with the board for the benefit of all gifted children, and he volunteered Tom to address the board if they wished. The board's attorney, Stanley Eisenhammer of Robbins, Nicholas, Lifton and Schwartz, indicated that it would be inappropriate. Irwin said he would close with two questions: Is Tom's education not Worth $110? and, what is the precedent that the board is setting? The board then adjourned to its second executive session for the evening and Cain an nounced that he didn't expect the board would take any action after returning to open meeting. In other actions, the board approved the hiring of six additional teachers at a cost estimated not to exceed $85,000 for the coming school year. This included one itinerant gifted education teacher (approved at a meeting Feb. 27 at Hilltop), one elementary teacher for Valley View, two additional junior high school teachers for Parkland, and two elementary remedial reading teachers for the Title I program. Dr. Farmer said that by making readjustments in staff, they could get by with only one additional teacher instead of two at Valley View. He ex plained to board member Tim Althoff that the salary of the gifted teacher would probably be $12,000 but they would recover 40 percent of their $7,800 proposal for the program from the state, when it is ap proved. The board also approved accepting cash instead of a land donation from the developer of Golfview Estates next to Chapel Hill Country club and to negotiate for the appropriate cash value of the land involved. The process is covered under the McHenry county developer donation ordinance. CRUSADE FOR CHRIST The Rev. Voltaire Walking The Dog Courthouse Additions Act To Beat Inflation Two proposed county building additions provided spirited discussion at the McHenry County board meeting last week. Before the board approved $75,000 for preliminary plans by the Courthouse Operations com mittee, County Board Chair man Richard Klemm spoke in favor of the $75,000 investment. He reminded board members inflation is pushing up the cost of the proposed addition to the McHenry county courthouse by about $70,000 a month. Two additions are included in the proposed expansion, a 100- foot by 270-foot, three-story addition at the north end of the building and an 80-foot by 100- foot addition at the south end.
