Before effective treatment of behavioral disorders is ac complished, it is necessary to have an idea as to the cause of the problem. Many times what seems to be the evident reason, (being overtired, going through a "stage") is not a factor at all. Often the cause is obscure and can only be detected by elimination of other possible causes. By far the easiest causes to pinpoint are those that can be detected by physical examination or past medical history. Such factors as history of serious head injury or sustained high fever can lead to damage of a portion of the brain, * causing behavior problems. Also, allergies, hypoglycemia, diabetes, or hyperthyrodism may make it impossible for the child to control his-her behavior. Prematurity, or birth weight under 5 pounds, has been cited as the cause of many problems, including learning and behavior problems. More difficult to pinpoint as a cause of behavior problems are environmental factors, usually family problems. Marital problems of the parents are a frequent factor in the development of a behavior problem in the children. Lack of consistency or disagreement as to discipline between parents is confusing to a child, who will often react with anger and acting out behavior. Emotional illness in a parent, especially compulsiveness (pathological need for extreme neatness and cleanliness) will usually trfgger an intense reaction in the child. Absence of one parent due to death or divorce can lead to problems (but does not automatically mean there will be behavior problems.) Methods of discipline can sometimes be a factor. It seems that either extreme, very harsh discipline or no discipline at all has much the same effect: the child feels unloved and con fused. Rather difficult to define, but certainly a factor, is a lack of "realness" in the parent. By this is meant that the child detects ambivalence in the parent (e.g. telling the child how much he-she is loved when the parent is very angry or when the parent is con- COURTHOUSE SQUARES SECTION 2 - PAGE 5 - PLA1NDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 30,197# stantly trying to hide some feeling from the child). Once the cause of the problem has been determined, effective treatment can begin. Knocking gladly that the door might be open, So that HE might enter therein; "Exchanging your sins just for blessings, Won't you bid Him, "O Stranger, come in?" On the threshold He's standing so patient, Often at night in the cold. Won't you open and say, "Jesus, enter. And lighten with sunshine my soul?" Let Him enter; He'll tell you a story. Oft repeated at some mother's knee Tis the story of the love that He gave to us all, To each sinner whatever they be. So today if you find Him there waiting, It will be no strange face that you scan; When you open the door you will know Him By the prints of the nails in His hands. By the prints that were made on Calvary's hill In the blood of the Lamb there He died. He gave His life that we might live, That day He was crucified. "1 am the way the truth and the life. Turn the handle and open the door. Only you yourself can open your heart To the love that I extend evermore" "Estelle H. Baldwin" NATURE'S CHILD You're nature's child born of spring, with all the things that summer brings. The sun that shines grows flowers so fine, full of love for every kind.
