PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY,MARCH 30,1979 Coaches Meet Bear Trainer Warrior basketball coach Ken Ludwig watches as Chicago Bear Assistant Head trainer Tom Wilkinson demonstrates the proper method of wrapping an ankle. The demonstration was j»art of a seminar conducted by Wilkinson at John's Sport Stop as part of its grand opening in McHenry Tuesday night. Over fifty coaches of boys and girls teams from schools throughout the area, in cluding McHenry high school, Johnsburg high school, Marian Central, Montini. McHenry junior high, Johnsburg junior high and grade school, attended. Wilkinson discussed injuries and their prevention and demonstrated techniques used to care for injuries. Weather per mitting Coach Ken Swanson will trot his Warrior baseball team out to McCracken Field tomorrow for a double dual session of games. The Warriors and the Crystal Lake Tigers both of the Fox Valley, will take on the ZeeBees from Zion and the Libertyville Wildcats. Both of these teams are from the North Suburban, where the Warriors last season were the conference champs. The Warriors record last season was 19 wins and only 4 losses, and the veteran coach would EARL WALSH' So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR March Madness hit the country this year as never before after high school and college basketball teams fought their way to the select groups. " Maine South wasn't taken too ; seriously by the experts, but ;had what it takes to win the Class AA State Championship. ;' Not many moons ago, you might have been thought of as a bit on the funny side if you ' predicted the DePaul team would wind up in the first four in the NCAA tournament. Coach Ray Meyer an,: his team won the hearts of many fans and brought glory to the Chicago area, a city starved for top recognition in sports. Catching up on the home front after being absent during $11 the excitement, we note that spirit ran high at Johnsburg High where the Skyhawks Wound up with a fine record. » March Madness brings fcheers and tears. * Our active Warrior Booster Club will serve a pancake breakfast next Sunday, April 1 at West Campus. * It's fun to meet and greet While you eat. - Kinda thought and now I know that Elvera Justen thailed that green grass from Florida when our snow was fcigh. «• * Today we can see grass in our back forty. Alvina set out some extra food that must have at tracted squirrels, rabbits, birds (including robins), and now a pair of ducks that may be ex ploring to find a site for a nest. Haven't seen a cardinal and decided they must be satisfied with the menu at the Teresa Conway ranch. You can't tell Chuck Hiller the White Sox can't hit a baseball. The Sox have beaten his Kansas City Royals four times this spring. At this point there is no cry to break up the Yankees. From what we read in the papers, the Yankees are breaking themselves up by ignoring the curfew and not putting out one hundred per cent on the field. The team owner is also breaking up according to the printed word. Maybe those fat, long term contracts are taking their toll. Of course, those same Yankees may come out snortin' when the season opens and they wake up and smell the gravy. FoQnd letters on the sports desk from Doc and Cynthia Fike, who wrote from Mesa, Arizona, that arrived shortly after we took off for the south. Doc noted that S.I.H. had said the Cubs had improved their team. And, "We'll see what hap pens". He couldn't have read it in this corner, but went on to write, "I like the one about the outfield being the best in the league. No doubt the Cubs can claim that statement. There is a brick wall that will stop all rolling balls and a nice green vine on the wall that sometimes catches a fly or two instead of the fielders." --And all the time I though he was a Cub fan. Doc. takes up some local items such as the water run ning over the new bridge on Pearl St. and under the New Old bridge on Hwt. 120. Wants us to check with the Plain- dealer artist. I dunno. Cynthia tells of a visit to the Bacon home -- a beautiful setting and a great spot for bird watching. She also tells of gas shortage and stopping at four stations before they could buy enough gas to get home from their visit with the Bacons, the Herb Engdahls and the Col. Lacys. The Fikes had also seen the George Rodenkirks and Ed and Agnes Thennes. McHenry people do get around. Cynthia added, "Let us know in your column when Spring has sprung and we'll come home." I can't guarantee anything about the weather. It has been tricky. The robins came home. But, I must say those fat blimps looked mighty puzzled as they searched for worms through a recent snow. * • * * * Those who smile often have more friends than those who frown. /Vie A "9 I*v ffl C" AlOWU EWuvfes Some people believe that apes can talk but don't for fear of being put to work. > o oo o oc JOHN'S SPORT STOP "Your One Stop Sport Shop" NOW OPEN! Seventy-five girls were entered in the 10-11 year old competition. Lake Region YMCA's strength was evident in vaulting and floor exercise competition, as they captured five out of the top ten places in like nothing better than to top it this season. Six lettermen are among the eighteen squad members, that Swanson hopes to build his team around this season. They are all seniors, Tim Frantz, Henry Glick, Mike Mroz, Pete Prust, Pat Teuber and Brett Thomas. Other seniors on the squad are Ed Gerstad. Bill Lang, Rockford East transfer Mike McPherron and Len Wronski. Junior members are Barry Anderson, Joe Bellich, John Berger, Jim Frantz, Rich Hager, Ken Hoff. Stuart Howerton and Greg Mroz. With his squad confined to indoors, Coach Swanson has not yet decided on a Parting lineup for the opener. vaulting; and six out of the top ten in floor exercise. Uneven parallel bars and balance beam proved to be weaker, placing only 1 gymnast on bars and two on balance beam. Among eight 10-11 year olds who will represent Lake Region YMCA at state are Karyn Althoff, Michelle Landis, and Melanie Smith, all of McHenry. Individual award winners were Althoff, 8th place, floor exercise; Landis, 5th on floor exercise; Smith, 6th on floor exercise.
