Photo Credit • Don Kaiser .Kathleen Thayer A disappointing turn out was evident at the March29 meeting of the Health and Agriculture committee of the McHenry county board. Hopefully the rain kept many interested McHenry county residents at home. The few faithful were there once again. We cannot stress enough the importance to you of the problems under discussion. Not only are the fate of dogs, cats, and horses being weighed, but zoning regarding animals as well. These issues affect all of us, owners of animals or not. You have not missed your opportunity to be heard, however. On April 6 at 9:30 at the County Court House, another meeting will be held. We only received two letters in response to our plea for those who wish to express opinions and who are not able to attend the meeting. Please write to us, and we will interject your voice into our presentation. You need not agree with our stand for us to represent you. We just are pleading for your response. Being an exceedingly long ordinance our column could not possibly outline the issues for you. However, please write to the Health and Agriculture department in care of Dr. Johnson at 2200 N. Seminary, Woodstock, Illinois 60098, and request a copy be sent to you. Better yet, drop in and pick one up. The major issue for con sideration as far as HP is concerned is cat registration. Although we are many years away from effective legislation and education to prevent the many abuses of the feline population, HP does feel that cat registration is a small step in the right direction, of course, nQ law can be better than the enforcement of that law...but, at least if we have a law, or ordinance, it is a beginning. Being an HP volunteer proves to one the need for some kind of protection for cats. Those owned by conscientious v persons are not in jeopardy but the others in our county are. It is for those that we appeal. Registering your cat will once again put a financial burden upon you, but in the long run your money will be turned back into Animal Control so that they can provide the county with a much needed cat holding facility. At the present time they are not funded for cats and may dispose of them im mediately if there is no morfe room available. If they were funded, the same laws protecting a found dog would apply as well as for cats. You see, in order to help those, who through no fault of their own have become victims of our society, someone has to pay. If that means you, please con sider it as a donation to save the lives of others less fortunate than you lucky feline. Please don't consider it an unfair penalty for being a good owner...although I grant you, it may seem that way. The argument is used many times that if I want to donate money to a cause then I will do so without being forced into it. I wish that would be true. HP has been struggling for many years now to provide a shelter for this county. We must rely on donations. We find that good intentions of those interested in our cause, are very few indeed. Therefore the county cannot reply on those good in tentions., we have no choice. Please write to us or to the committee directly. It's now or never to express your opinion. Interestingly enough, bald eagles aren't actually bald. Rather, the tops of their heads are covered with slicked-down white feathers and it's only from a distance that they appear not to have hair. Sunday, April 22 is a red- letter day for McHenry area residents who will walk in support of the March of Dimes. The 25 kilometer Superwalk for the prevention of birth defeats is an event much anticipated in the community. Walkers of all ages are ex pected to participate. However, the majority will come from our junior and senior high schools. For many young people across the country, this annual event has growth into a tradition. Each year they get out their walking shoes in support of the March of Dimes. Doug Pratt, event chairman, said. "Each year more than a quarter-million infants are born with mental or physical damage. We have numerous cases in our own community." Pledges from the Superwalk will assist March of Dimes programs of research, medical service and education. In the McHenry area, monies will be used for hospital equipment, health career scholarships and newborn intensive care nur series. Walkers will begin their 25 kilometer (approx. 16 miles) trek, at 10 a.m. from the city park at PeaN and Park streets. For further details, contact Doug Pratt at the McHenry Alternative high school, 344- '2424. No matter what the age, support is needed to prevent • Egg beating got you beat?
