All the comforts of home amid Hawaiian splendor Couples and families alike are discovering the joys of staying in a condominium resort while on vacation in Hawaii. Condominiums, the hybrid of an apartment and a hotel, offer travelers all the com forts of home plus many extras. "You'll find everything from luxuriously appointed units to more modestly fur nished ones with prices to match," says George Arch er, tour sales director for Aloha Airlines, an inter- island carrier offering mod ern jet service. Condos, as they're popu larly called, range in size from studios to three-bed room apartments, all with fully equipped kitchens and washer/dryer facilities. In terms of value, condos in Hawaii can't be beat. For the pripe of a hotel room, you can rent the equivalent of a suite. Those hap pen to be the botanical names for the very popular blue ash and weeping willow trees-- common names that describe them best. All plants have many common names, but only one official "tag." Common names really tell a story about a tree. The blue ash, for example, got is name because the inner bark was used by the pioneers to make a blue dye. The legendary weeping willow, on the other hand, has been the symbol of grief since the exiled children of Israel wept beside the waters of Babylon and hung their harps upon the willows in the midst of their grief. According to Ortho's new book, "The World of Trees," one of America's original chewing gums came from the leaves of the sour gum tree. If you feel threatened by a neighborhood witch, you might consider the benefits of owning a wych elm. The his tory of this plant is traced back to the days of tree wor ship. A sprig of elm was used in the butter churn to prevent bewitching and the delaying of buttering and was a fa vored protection against witches. Also, the witch in witch- hazel does not refer to the Halloween witch, but to an old Anglo-Saxon word, "wick" or "wicken." If you think you might re duce your grocery bill by in vesting in a Kentucky coffee tree, forget it. The American pioneers, in their attempts to be self-supporting, brewed some of the fruits of this tree as a coffee substitute. They made that mistake just once.
