Research shows that plant ing deciduoujA trees at the west and soutn sides of the house can reduce summer cooling bills and winter heat ing bills by 10 to 20 percent. Savings vary depending on climate. In South Dakota, a plains state with high winter winds, fuel consumption was measured for two identical h o u s e s , o n e w i t h a windbreak of trees and the other exposed. The tree- protected house had 25% less fuel consumption. In the more sheltered Eastern states, savings are less dramatic, measuring about 10 percent, according to "The World of Trees."
