ILL. 6009Q Anne Carroll, member of the McHenry County Defenders Executive council and also Energy chairman, has an nounced the Defenders' call to political action against further nuclear power develooment in the aftermath of the "near disaster" at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. In a detailed letter to United States senators and representatives, the Defenders are asking for much stricter regulation of these power plants, and an orderly phase- out of those is use today. In the letter, Mrs. Carroll refers to the fact that less than 2 percent of the nation's total energy is derived from nuclear power plants, and only 12 percent of its electricity, indicating that now is the time to become less dependent upon this energy source. She also mentions the high financial burden which the average citizen must bear for the cost of May 13 --church school --9:45 a.m. -- Ringwood church. May 17 -- choir practic e - 7:00 p.m. -- Ringwood church. May 18 -- clothing closet - Woodstock -- 9 a.m.-6 p.m. -- Ringwood ladies serve. May 24 -- sewing circle -- Mary Butler's or Alice Peet's. DIAL A PRAYER 1-385-1234 nuclear power from its cradle to its grave. As Defenders' Energy chairman, Ms. Carroll also states her concern for McHenry county residents; those living near the eastern boundary of the couqty are only 20 miles from the Zion nuclear power plant, while those in the western portion are only about 25 miles from the Byron plant now under construction The possibility of exposure to radioactive wastes being transported through the county is also cited as a source of concern. Ms. Carroll is also concerned that there are apparently no plans for orderly evacuation of areas near nuclear power plants, despite federal law requiring such plans. Her letter to the senators and representatives also calls for increased focus on develop ment of solar and related energies. She states that recent developments promise that solar electricity will be cost- competitive and available commercially within a few years. Mrs. Carroll urges all con cerned citizens to write their state and federal represen tatives. "Walk on - walk on with hope in your heart and you'll never Mailt alone", sings Julie (Sue Alblinger) to Billy Bigelow (Mike Davis) as Nettie Fowler (Joy Spengel) of McHenry look son in the moving death scene in Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel", to oe presented at Marian Central Catholic high school May 18. 19 and 20.
