«• PUUNDKALER - FRIDAY, MAY II. 1V7« United Way Goal Continues Planning for an annual fund raiting campaign Is a year long process, so the work of the United Way of McHenry County never ends. At left. Robert Martens, executive director of Family Service and Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County, briefs the board of directors of the United Way of McHenry County on profile and programs of his agency. Members of the board pictured here come from all areas of McHenry county. Because of thousands of generous people in McHenry county, the human service agencies of the Unted Way of McHenry County are able to continue their programs through 1979. some of these services had to be curtailed, however, as the campaign last fall only produced a little more than half the goal of $315,000. Nevertheless, the work goes on, and plans for a new 1979-80 campaign to be launched in the Fall, are in the making. United Way members are agreed that plans for a succesful campaign can only be as successful as has been the work of enlightening the public about agencies programs and services to McHenrv county residents. This year the United Way of McHenry County will inaugurate a Speaker's bureau, making a representative of United Way available with a slide film presentation to all service clubs and other organizations throughout the county. The speaker will familiarize interested groups with each agency receiving financial help from the Unted Way and explain why they receive funds. The presentation of agencies and their work will include Family Service and Com munity Mental Health Center for McHenry County, which provides counseling services for individuals, couples families and groups; Northern Illinois Special Recreation association, which provides programs for handicapped children and adults who are unable to particpate in or dinary recreational programs; the Youth Service Bureau for McHenry County, a community based social service agency designed to assist troubled young people and their families; Sunset Manor, a retirement community that provides an atmosphere of security and contentment for the aging and retired; the Salvation Army, an organization that serves shut- ins, hospitalized servicemen, veterans and entire families in need; The McHenry County Association For the retareded, which achieves outstanding results at their Pioneer Center for the Exceptional, training developmentally handicapped persons for gainful em ployment in our society ; the McHenry County Senior Citizens council, which provides recreation, education Prices Effective Friday, May 10 thru Sunday, May 13 WIN a week for two HAWAII or one of 199 other Hilton RAINBOW WOKINDt or one of ante than tooo otter prises during the Prices effective while quantities last. Observe Right To Read Week May 6-12, 1979 is Right to Read week in Illinois. * Right to Read is a program which seeks to achieve func tional literacy in more than 90 percent of the U.S. population by 1980. "This program is based on the conviction that reading problems can be remedied and prevented if all available resources in each community are used more fully," State Superintendent of Education Joseph M. Cronin explained. Right to Read is sponsored by the United States office of Education. Governor James Thompson and the state board of education have declared May 6- 12 as Right ot Read week in Illinois. In his official learn more about the presen tation concerning these agencies are requested to pall the United Way office at 815- 455-2522. proclamation, the Governor urged "...all Illinoisans to improve their reading skills and to assist with reading programs in their com munities." Improving basic literacy skills is one of the state board of education's highest priorities. "The state board has pledged its continued support of right- to-read programs for all citizens", Cronin said. "Providing programs that assure students the opportunity to learn how to read and com municate effectively is surely one of the most fundamental purposes our schools can serve," the state superin tendent observed. The goal of Right to Read week is to stress the im portance of reading as a life time habit and a skill for all. The week-long observance will focus on activities to be held in local communities. Summer reading projects will be an nounced and regional reading and literacy workshops are being planned. Discovery Weekend Is Offered At Camp Happy other's Day Like a good neighbor.
