"The Greek's" Prognosis: Old Bridge • John's Sport PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MAY 11,1979 ,. Jggmm£gu Stop! It is the time of year for "Jimmy the Greek" to come up with his Twelve Inch Forecast for 1979. Facts and figures have been tabulated and analyzed while rosters have been scanned. Nothing has been left unnoticed or left out. The Forecast With the Computed Won-Lost Records for 1979: Team w 1 Old Bridge- John's Sport Stop 24 3 Raymond's Bowl 19 8 Rusty Nail 19 8 B&H Tap 16 11; Wayne's Huemann Water Con. Uncle Jamie's Oaks Marathon 7 20 Amene&n Family Life 4 23 LittteJohn's 3 24 If anyone is interested "the Greek" was 50 percent correct last year, however, two of the middle four ball clubs had identical records while the other two were either one win or one loss better. In fact the 1978 final standings were not determined until the last day of regular season play. This year "the Greek" notes that the 27 game season plus the addition of two new teams presents an even greater challenge to his forecast. But he feels confident about his picks. The middle 4 ball clubs could provide the real ex citement during the 1979 pennant race. He feels all 4 have a good chance of going into the final two weeks of play still in sight of a playoff position. Also a two team battle for second place looks great. A thumbnail analysis of each team along with "the Greek's" reasoning followg. First: Old Bridge is the quality team in the league, an "A division ball club in a C division league" with .100 batting average points higher than its nearest 1978 com petitor. Speed, defense and pitching all combine to make Old Brdige-John's Sport Stop the team to beat. Second: Raymond's Bowl is younger and quicker than last season. Their hitting is above average and their fielding will be more than adequate; except "more than adequate" will not be enough to finigh higher than second place. Third: Rusty Nail has tightened up its defense, im proved its batting order and has one of the better benches in the league. After missing the 1978 playoffs "the Greek" is betting on the Nail to be the 'thorn in the side' of the top two teams. Fourth: B&H Tap is an ex perienced team good enough to beat 15 other Harvard ball clubs for that city's Twelve Inch Championship. But "the Greek" doubts their experience will carry them higher than fourth in McHenry; reason On The Sidelines BY DICK ROBBITT Congratulation tov Mike Shanahan and his "Water Warriors". Last Saturday they won the first Fox Valley Conference swimming title. With a limited number of boys on the team, the veteran coach placed them well, and as a result another trophy has been added at West Campus. It was the second conference championship for Warriors this year. Last fall Chuck Cuda's golfers brought home the title, so the Warriors are holding their own in the new conference. Coach Dan Boland's McHenry High track team won a triangular the other day. Victories have been few and far between this season, and it was nice to see the Irishman smile. The Warriors are at Crystal Lake tonight for the Fox Valley Conference meet. From all reports it should be a toss up, as there is no clear out favorite. With Chris Nowell, senior hurdler back in form, the Warriors could make it interesting tonight. They are not expected to win, but they could take a few points away from some of the other teams. Gary Gray is quite pleased with his netters this season. Their record at this writing is 12 wins and 5 losses. They were not expected to win six matches all season and already have doubled their quota. You never can tell what will happen in a high school athletic contest. The girls softball team is hanging in there. With the second half of the conference in front of them, we hope they make their move on the leaders. You can bet they will give it the old college try. Don Seaton's girls' track team journeys to Mt. Prospect this weekend for the District meet. Injuries have hampered the Warriors this season. This District is a tough one, and all Warrior fans are wishing them well at Mt. Prospect. Ken Swanson's baseball team is in the middle of the peak in the Fcgc Valley. They came from behind Monday night to defeat Dundee in a wild one. Nine errors in the game, and the wind was blowing all over McCracken Field. The I.H.S.A. evidently has not heard of the gasoline crisis. Tuesday the Warriors travel to Rockford Guilford to play in a regional baseball game. If they win that one, they then will travel to Freeport to play the Pretzels. The Warriors are host to the Regional tournament, but a new format is in effect this year, due to the splitting into classes. Twelve teams were assigned to the McHenry Regional. All the Rockford schools, Freeport, Hononegah of Rockton, Belvidere, Woodstock and the Warriors. Four teams were seeded and drew a bye. Freeport was the number one seed. Games will be played in the first round at four sites. Then the second round will be played at four sites. The four semi-finalists then will come to McHenry on Saturday May 19th for a doubleheader. The following Monday the 21st the two winners will return to McHenry for the finals. The Warriors are the farthest eastern team, while freeport sits about 80 miles west of here. It is very possible that Freeport if they should advance to the finals, will make two trips to McHenry in a period of two days. Thats alot of traveling to get here for a 4:30 p.m. game. It is nice to host a tourney, but Belivdere would have been more centrally located. Or why couldn't the Warriors have been assigned to the Libertyville area. There are going to be a lot of busses traveling back and forth for baseball games the next couple of weeks. I'm sure that the McHenry Regional isn't the only one in the state with a travel problem, if that is what you want to call it. Surely someone in Bloomington could come up with a better idea than the one that exists at the present. Anyway it will be interesting to see the outcome of the brainchild of the I.H.S.A. aiic CTflD travel service unc-Jiur airune ...HowollT Vow can compare thorn oil undor on* root si Our oHicol Wo oro lor stoomshlp. oHIno*. Joe Prazak may have to retire. "The Greek" stated, "in tangibles such as the role a manager plays other than making the lineup will play a definite/role in how this team finished in 1979." Sixth: Huemann's Water Conditioning finished strong in 1978; they are a solid knit group but the Greek says, "even with the acquisition of Peno Hester and Bob Mauch they'll still lack a quantity of big name players needed to bring them any higher!" Seventh: "Uncle Jamie's is in for a rough season," says "the Greek". "Pitching problems will only compound the disaster they will ex perience." Not only has Uncle Jamie's roster remained un- changedisince last season while the top teams continue to i prove theirs, but this seasoi tough opening schedule is the reverse of last season's somewhat lighweight begin ning. Eighth: Oaks Marathon is a sleeper but "the Greek" says "lack of practice will cause too many losses early in the year." New ball clubs always face a dilemma when the season starts on a sour note. Ninth: American Family Life Insurance, if they can field ten ball players, may be tougher than last year's Hosptial team but as "the Greek" asks, "how much tougher can a team which won only one game in 1978 be if 9 players will adorn their 1979 roster?" Tenth: Little John's roster shows "too few power hitters and too little player ex perience" to handle themselves in a league which has grown stronger every year. It's going to be another long season for this ball club. They won the first game 9 to 3 behind the 4 hit pitching of Dave Smith. Smith added to his own cause with a double and a triple. In the nightcap the Warriors won 13 to 1 in five innings. We discussed all the disadvantages a team from outside the McHenry area would have in its first season of competition. B&H Tap will be playing on no less than five ball diamonds, each one unique in its infield quality. There will be no fence which up in Harvard provides the Tap with homeruns. B&H has plenty of power but homeruns are always fewer in a league without fences. Third and most important of all will be the lack of in formation on each of the other nine ball clubs, especially their hitters and which field they go to. But Ulmer replies, "other teams don't know us either, and we'll find out soon enough what their batters are like." Ulmer went on to explain that his balK club plays in no less than 3 leagues this season, including McHenry, Harvard and Genoa. They have won their division of a 2 division 16 team Harvard League 3 years straight. Also they have won the cham pionship playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years. ^n Genoa B&H Tap has placed in third place the last two seasons while finishing first in 1977. Ulmer went on to say, "his club has been together the last 5 or 6 years" which added to playing in 3 leagues should , provide plenty of softball ex perience necessary for the club to do well in McHenry. Besides experience B&H will bring along plenty of power and hitting. Ten batters hit safely out of the eleven who played on opening day. Jim Mulvenna, Mike Walsh, Jim Danehey and Tom Thomas are good power hitters while Randy Kosman and Jerry Ienaney provide the base hits. When asked how he thinks they'll finish Ulmer stated, "We'll be competitive, but I won't promise anything!" The first came has shown fans in McHenry that B&H can hit and score (a twelve run in ning ). They better not be taken lightly by any of last year's ball clubs because teams have had a habit of making the playoffs in their first season. B&H is capable of doing that in 1979! OAKS MARATHON Confidence is a word that comes up time and again whenever you talk to Terry Hovseth, manager of Oaks Marathon. Hovseth has assembled a team which he feels "is going to give the other teams plenty of competition". Bill Jackson, Steve Lane and Rick Wigman should provide Oaks with 3 power hitters. Barry Wire, Terry Hovseth and Dick Doherty are 3 batters who can get on base frequently Hovseth's major concern is getting his first year ball club used to each other "Some of my players have been together up in Wisconsin. A few of us have some ex perience in the McHenry Twleve Inch League, but wo definitely need more practice time together to make us a contender for the playoffs." "We are not going to finish last!" says Hoveseth but this year he is not expecting miracles either "If we can make the playoffs, fine!" If Oaks Marathon does not make it Manager Hovseth can only look back at 1979 as a year where his ball club readied itself for 1980 and hopefully beat a few upper division ball clubs in the process! After Hoff and Teuber went out, Jim Frantz walked, stole second and third He then scored on a wild pitch. Thomas walked, and went to third on Tim Frantz's hit to center. Barry Anderson now running for Frantz. Prust singled Thomas home, $nd Anderson went to.third. He then scored on a wild throw trying to pick him off third.
