I AGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MAY 18. 1979 •i Harvey Brown releases some of the twt-million young walleye in to the Chain O'Lakes last' Friday. A Lot More Fish Two million walleye fry were stocked in to the middle of the Chain O'Lakes system Friday afternoon in order to sup plement the walleye population, according to Harvey Brown, district fisheries biologist. Brown said that the walleye do reproduce in the Chain O'Lakes region, but their • survival rate is not good. The reason is because of "turbid" water. Turbidity is muddy water-- silt suspended in the water due to either carp and bottom-feeders, or, wave wash from wind or boats. Walleye like to spawn on gravel or rocky bottom areas, Brown said. If the water is turbid, the silt covers the eggs and suffocates them. As far as the carp are con cerned, efforts are being made • • • h; mm. Brown checks one of the numerous bags of two-day-old Walleye fish. This bag contains approximately 105,000 of the babies. STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD to decrease their numbers. Brown said a number of carp have been caught and minute radio-transmitters surgically implanted in their abdominal cavities, so that they can be tracked. In this way, the trackers can find out where the carp are schooling and com mercial fishermen can remove them. The transmitting carp have been marked by means of a small tag near their dorsal fins and Brown asks anyone who catches one to release it. Brown estimates that the walleye will be of "catchable" size in about 2 or 3 years. "If the program works, we'll stock the lakes every couple of years," Brown said. Incidentally, Brown said, fishing in the Chain O'Lakes is good. The winter-kill was not as severe as reported. "The fish are there," he said. Although he is 6 to 7 after 2 games the left handed slugger has been placed 2 notches further down in the lineup. Not only is the situation aggravating, but as Rohrer stated. "If I drop any lower I'll be out of the lineup altogether"! Rohrer also wants it to be known that he was manager in charge of the Bridge team in McHenry Twelve Inch Play and responsible for that perfect 28-0 season last year! The days when Old Timers told us not to buy anything until we had the money to pay for it are long gone. Today everybody wants you to carry credit cards. Go into a store and a clerk who doesn't know you from Adam will ask. "Cash or charge?" Not being strong for out of town shopping. I will probably never use a couple of cards from big department store. Told me I was one of the "chosen" ones. Boy, that gets you! Last winter I found out that at least some Rent-A-Car com panies do not want cash. They want you to use your credit card. Of course, credit cards are great if a person remembers there will be a day of reckoning. Which reminds me -- deficit spending by our government has always confused me. Guess it means spending a lot of money you hope to have some day. People may change. The world may change. But, young boys looking forward to the last day of school haven't changed. An item missed in reporting last week was the near-Eagle of Betty Smith on the no. 16 green. It seems her approach shot flew up and landed within an inch of the cup. Betty was pleased to take the birdie, however In this Tuesday's event she tried to duplicate the act but settled for the par as she and Liz Nolan vied for closest to the pin on the same hole. In this the first week of a two- week "special" three chip-ins were reported: that of Nancy Wilkins on no. 1, Nell Fidler on no. 2 and Laverne Harpling on no. 5. One of our newer gals, Lynn Schmidt, birdied both no. 15 and no. 18. Interesting results for the first day of the event found only two teams turning in scores under par. Currently in first place with a total of 227 is the team of Letty Busscher, Barb Weber, Ginnie Spengel and Gladys Warfield. Two strokes behind at 229 for second place is the team of Dorothy Freund, Mable Smith, Sully Consago and Mary Mutchinsky. At even par with 231 for third place is the team of Nell Fidler, Lynn Schmidt, Kitty Evans and Dottie Shadel. Walking in from the course feeling depressed three teams found themselves in a tie for fourth place with totals of 236! They are the teams of Floss O'Connell, Faye Stewart, Freida Miller and Jean Napier, Liz Nolan, Betty Smith. Ethel Koehler and Shari Weakman; Char Zwissler, Betty Castle, Jane Weiss and Toots Gerstad. The concluding round of the 3-best-ball event next week will find the foregoing teams setting the pace with the remaining seven teams attempting to upset the leaders. Low putts for the day found a three-way tie in Class A with 31 each for Laverne Harpling. Liz Nolan and Nancy Wilkins. In Class B Anna Johnson and Mabel Smith shared the honors with 33 each In Class C 35 for Gloria Spiess was low and in Class D Mary Mutchinsky had low putts of 33. In Class A Nell Fidler shot Low Net with 78; in Class B a 75 gave Low Net to Lynn Schmidt; in Class C 84 for Low Net was tied by Jane Weiss and Barb Leight; while 77 gave Mary Mutchinsky Low Net in Class D. This Friday six of the gals will be participating in their first team event of the season when they host Foss Park of North Chicago, and a brief reminder comes from Ginnie Spengel that Flower Planting will take place Monday mor ning at nine o'clock. The McHenry Girls' Varsity Softball team was eliminated from the 1979 Illinois State High School Playoffs on Tuesday when they lost to Crystal Lake Central 10-7 in the sub- regionals. Crystal Lake scores 3 runs in the first inning on only one base hit when they took advantage of 3 walks and two hit batsmen. That was the story all af ternoon as the Tigers combined 7 hits with 14 base on balls for 10 runs. The score might have been higher as Crystal Lake left the bases loaded in 4 out of 6 in nings. Credit the Warrior defense with helping to keep the score close. Warrior second baseman Chris Connell picked off a Crystal Lake runner who strayed too far off base after a perfect relay throw to first baseman Sharon Smith nabbed the Tiger baserunner. Pitcher Sue Haddick picked off 3 line drives hit back at her on the mound. McHenry socred 4 runs in the third to hold their only lead of* the game. Pam West hit a bases loaded single for one run and Dale Williams doubled in 2 more runs for the big hits of the inning. Two innings later Sharon Smith, Vicky Kopsell and Sue Haddick combined 3 singles with 3 Crystal Lake throwing errors and a ground out RBI by Pam West to score their final 3 runs. At this writing the Warriors baseball team is playing at Rockford Guilford, and we won't know if they must journey to Freeport on Thursday. If they win both games they will play here tomorrow against a yet to be determined foe. Congratulations to Carrie Mortell and Diane Peterson. These two fine ladies qualified for the girls' state track meet at Charleston today and tomorrow. Carrie will run in the 440 yd. dash, and Diane will high jump. Don Seaton was a happy fella to see that two members of his squad made the finals. The Mt. Prospect District was a tough one, and the girls did themselves and the school quite well in the district last week. If the weather doesn't break for the better, the girls' softball team under Coach Mary Lou Osterman and Pat Wirtz will be playing all summer. At this writing the girls have six games to go in the Fox Valley. The boys will finish up on Wednesday. Do you think "Twig Miller" the groundskeeper is partial to the boys? Gary Gray will take his tennis team to Crystal Lake this week for the District. Last week the Warriors finished third in the Fox Valley. From all reports Tim Sabatka overcame a lot of physical difficulties and gave the lad from Crystal Lake a whale of a battle before going down to defeat. Maybe Tim can turn the tables this weekend. Dan Boland and his track team will journey tonight to Kaneland for the District. Hopes for the Warriors to qualify anyone for the state lie in the feet of senior hurdler Chris Nowell. Chris won both the 110 and 330 meter hurdles last week in the Fox Valley, and will be a threat in the District. Recently I chastised the sophomore coach from Crystal Lake Central for not playing a game due to lack of an umpire. The good natured coach, who I understand took a lot of ribbing from his fellow coaches, called to tell me that he earned his "spurs" as he defeated the McHenry sophomores 3 to 0 in a game held recently. The "rookie" as he called himself was most pleasant as he called in his team's record for the Fox Valley, and I sincerely hope that he learned that on the lower levels of athletics, it is not winning or losing, or officiating, but just play the game. Really the kids could care less who officiates the game. Anyway best of luck to the young fellow, but not when playing Warrior teams. Word from Baldwin Kansas and Baker University. It seems that former Warrior Steve Mai a shortstop on the team picked up a lot of honors at the team banquet. Steve was first of all selected by his teammates as the Most Valuable Player of the Year. He led the team in hitting, and was chosen on the All Conference Team. Our congratulations to Steve along with all Warrior fans, and who said that former Warriors do not get to play college ball. John Mclnerney from Eastern 111. University was a college All American in Cross Country and Track, and the list could go on and on. Maybe not in the Big 10 where size is the most important factor, but in the small college ranks, the former Warriors do get to participate and hold their own with anyone on that level. The Annual McHenry County Track Meet will be held Monday at Jacobs High School. Jacobs is located just three miles south of the new Crystal Lake South high school. If you Warrior fans want to see excellent outdoor facilities for athletics, just journey down Randall road for a few miles and see best in this area. It's a shame that McHenry has to take second place to the Dundee schools. Coach Mike Shanahan has informed me to announce that the McHenry Swim Club will hold their first meeting on June 11. In the past two years the McHenry Swim Club has won 15 and lost 1, including an 8 and 0 season last vear. Swimmers and Divers you are most welcome to come on June 11 and join the club. You will get the best coaching available in Mike Shanahan. .
