PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. MAY 23,1979 "EARL WALSH So I He SPORTS EDIT R The Preakness in Baltimore on Saturday proved that it was no (like when Spectacular Bid won the Kentucky Derby. You can call the Spectacular one great the way he won going away in the Preakness. It looked like they crowded him but all it did was give him room to run. They failed to box him in. Now I have seen everything. A bicycle rider stopped for a stop sign. The bicycle problem is another reminder of Will Rogers' remark -- "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." Most of us would die a thousand deaths if we hit one of those riders who break all the rules. An education program is certainly in order to train our young (and some not so young) bike riders. One life saved should make it all worthwhile. Our neighbor, Ford Hanford, was so disgusted with his Cubs in that famous 23-22 game with the Phillies that he turned off the TV after the first inning and walked outside to cool off. The Cubs were losing 21 to 9 when I switched on the game so there was no reason to turn it off if records were to be broken. Of course, the wind was blowing out in that game, but one could also surmise that the rabbit was put back in that batch of balls. 4' The story ended in that famous game when the Cubs decided to pitch to the league- leading home run hitter (Sch midt). Bet they wished they had given the mighty man one base instead of four. *' Bob Adams and Bob Shulda ;4re in a race to see who will be >|nown as Mr. Slim. Between ttiem they have lost enough ^weight to make a third man ;Iook full grown. Some of you may remember the late John Fay, a local man who knew a lot about the game of baseball. John had the same theory on bunting thai) Lou Boudreau expressed recently when he advised young ball players to hold the bat still and let the ball hit the bat. That way a batter can1 place the ball and let it roll dead. Lou had better tell that to the present crop of big leaguers. They can't bunt for sour apples. NOTE TO MRS. DON GERSTAD: I found that article in the April issue of Readers Digest about your Cubs. How could I ever have missed it! But, I thought "Wait 'til Next Year" was the White Sox theme song. While most people think of Babe Ruth as a homerun slugger, you sports fans know that he was a great pitcher for the Boston Americans before he was switched to the outfield to get him in the game every day. Back in 1917 Ruth was the starting pitcher against Washington and walked the first battier. He blew his top at the umpire, "Brick" Owens, and was given the old heave ho from the game. That brought in Ernie Shore. The base runner was caught stealing. Shore then retired 26 batters for a perfect game. How I wish the White Sox had some relief pitchers who could retire 26 batters in a week. I have a very comfortable, soft old hat that Alvina wants to dispose of --- and "What will people think?" As we entered Bimbo's Herman Zwissler recognized the lid as something special so kept a watchful eye on it for me. Thought that was right friendly. It was a case of a new friend watching an old friend for me. When words fail you and you get that sunken feeling: "Did you mail that letter I gave you last week?" Short summer. I saw a Christmas ad this week. Skyhawks Defeat Harvard 5-4 In Playoff Opener By Joe Kost The High School Regional Playoffs began last Tuesday' and the Johnsburg Skyhawks- proved themselves by defeating the Harvard Hornets 5-4. Johnsburg is seeded eighth out of 12 teams in the regional and Geno Kingston of DeKalb is seeded first. Even'though the score was close, the game itself was a Skyhawk runaway. Harvard jumped on winning pitcher Jake Breit in the first inning with two base hits and a walk. Breit buried himself by walking the next two batters to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Then, with the bases still loaded, first baseman Mike Gillelte ex ploded on a fastball for a three run triple and a 4-0 Harvard lead. Johnsburg held Harvard to only two base runners in the second inning. Turn Things Around The Skyhawks changed things around in the third in ning and cut Harvard's lead to only two runs. Jake Breit led off with a walk and Keith Surrat followed with a basehit. A sacrifice bunt by Dave Hiller moved the runners to second and third. Kurt Valentin hit a quick ball to the shortstop; he dropped it and the Skyhawks had a run with men on first and third. Surrat scored on a wild pitch and at the end of the third inning Johnsburg was trailing, 4-2. Neither team scored in the fourth inning but in the fifth, consecutive base hits by Keith Surrat and Dave Hiller allowed Kurt Valentin to unload a deep flyball to left field to score another Skyhawk run. The action then shifted to the bottom of the seventh inning. The Skyhawks trailed by one run and had only three outs to make up for it. Jake Breit started things off with a walk. Then the Skyhawks bats literally exploded. Dave Hiller hit a long double down the left field line that moved Breit to third. With men on second and third, Kurt Valentin unloaded for his third and fourth R.B.I.'s of the game by cracking a double into left-center field that gave Johnsburg a 5-4 victory. Harvard had four runs on 8 scattered hits while Johnsburg claimed 5 runs on 9 hits. Keith Surrat and Jim Boelens each had 2 hits, Dave Hiller collected 3 hits and Kurt Valentin picked up 4 R.B.I.'s on one hit. Jake Breit picked up his fourth win out of his seven starts. Cheri Kofler, (at right) is only a freshman, but she is showing lots of potential on the Skyhawk girls' track team. Kofler regularly finishes first in the long jump and 100 yard and 220 yard dash events. Last week she qualified for State at the Oregon District with a time of 12.33 in the 100 yard dash. Twenty-three schools participated in the meet.Kofler goes to Eastern Illinois University today to participate in the State finals.
