Wadell State Rep. R. Bruce Waddell (R-Dundee) has been recognized as an "Outstanding Legislator for 1978" by the Illinois conservative Union (ICU). The ICU is a not-for-profit educational foundation that has as its primary goal the fur thering of conservative philosophies in legislative and political areas. The ICU bases its "Out standing Legislator" award on a series of legislative votes on issues judged by the Union to be key to the economic and social welfare of Illinois taxpayers. The award takes into account votes on both substantive and appropriations legislation. Rep. Waddell was one of only 18 House members to receive the recognition from the ICU. Total membership of the Illinois House is 177 representatives. Illinois dairy farmers are taking the lead in helping ob serve June Dairy month. James Kurtz, manager of the American Dairy Association of Illinois, said he anticipates 1979 activities will be the most comprehensive June Dairy month promotion ever held. "Throughout the state, 4-H clubs will be armed with recipes and product in formation, iron-on transfers, bumper stickers and other items to help call consumers' attention to the importance of milk and other dairy products. "Milk and diary products should be an integral part of every person's diet. For money invested and calories con sumed, milk holds its own in living up to the slogan so closely associated with milk- Nature's Most Nearly Perfect Food," said Kurtz. Though farmers are involved in the later-than-usual spring planting, Kurtz expects farm men and women to join 4-H members as they seek con sumers in shopping malls, food stores, and downtown street corners. "The literature and recipes will stress the fact that milk and other diary products are exceptionally good nutritional values," continued Kurtz. Several organizations are joining in the June Dairy month promotion. Governor James Thompson has signed a proclamation saluting the state's dairy farmers. He was joined in this ceremony earlier this month by Kay Deters, reigning ADA of Illinois dairy Princess from Quincy. Kurtz said dairying con tributes a significant portion of income to the state's agricultural community. Over $230 million in cash receipts from the sale of milk represents 4 percent of the farm income in Illinois. Illinois' dairymen produced almost billion pounds of milk, placing Illinois twelfth among all states in total milk production. Illinois is a major cheese manufacturing state, ranking ninth in dairy products among the 50 states with almost 2 billion pounds manufactured annually. Illinois ranks first in swiss cheese, producing almost a fourth of the nation's total production. It ranks second in the manufacturing of munster cheese and seventh in creamed cottage cheese production. Illinois is the sixth ranking ice cream manufacturing state, emphasizing the sizable portion of the state's economy that revolves around dairying and the subsequent dairy product manufacture, Kurtz said. Illinois' leading dairy producing county is Stephenson county, 325 million pounds. Following are Jo Daviess, 211 million pounds; Clinton county, 174 million pounds; and McHenry county, 155 million pounds. State herds average 10,598 pounds of milk per cow, slightly under the national average of 11,200 pounds. Stephenson county farmers have the most dairy cows, 31,000, followed by Jo Daviess, 20,100; Clinton, 16,400, and McHenry, 14,200. from HISTORY'S SCRAPBOOK DATES AND EVENTS FROM YESTERYEARS May 25,1787 -- Delegates to the Constitutional Convention hold their first regular session in Independence Hall, Philadelphia.
