I like that other stuff And. of cdfiirse. some readers have always said, "Put this in your column"7)What they want might bring a libel suit. No way! This column is for fun. So you want a trip, eh? Here's one of long ago. Can think of one trip with my long time friend, the late "Red" Winkel, in his Model T to see an Illini football game in Champaign. We were asked to call on an elderly couple who formerly lived in this area. After introducing ourselves, the kindly lady extended her hand and invited us to come inside. I stepped on a small rug that rested on a slippery floor and skated half way across the room. That struck Winkel's funny bone and he didn't help me out of the situation. Another lady asked us to stop and see her daughter and son-in-law who operated a bakery. r They sent a fresh loaf of bread home to the mother. > >1 Oh, we were busy! £ ' The first lady had sent a bag of pears for a niece back home. -- '* Since we were taking a few days vacation, we stopped in Piicago on our way home. t z The pears spoiled and we had (o loss them out. r -- Knowing the loaf of bread Would dry out, we gave it to •'Red's" sister and helped eat k i * > v Then came letters to see if (he pears and bread were en joyed An explanation? Try that on ^our ukelele. ~~~ ' You can't beat fun at the old Sail park -- especially if your ifcam is playing Oakland. -- Watched the Sox drop a double header to the California ijngels Sunday. They may be I angels in their own back yard, but devils they were in Comiskey Park. The Sox played like they had lead in their shoes in that double loss, then came back on Monday hell-bent for victory against Cleveland for a 6-1 victory. » Of course, Ken Kravec pit ched a beautiful game, allowing three hits in the first inning then slamming the door and not allowing another hit. Kravec enjoyed super defense and robust hitting in that game. "Tinky" Meyer wants it known that she hasn't been pressured into being a Yankee fan. No sir! She's for those Cubs all the way. A house divided. The Cubs (we must admit) suffered a bad blow when their ace pitcher and stopper, Rick Reuschel, developed a sore shoulder. They need the big man. It must have given Cub fans the heebee-jeebees when Mike Vail was injured sliding into second base and Manager Herman Franks trotted Reuschel out to run for him. Just suppose Rick was in jured sliding into third base or home plate. That isn't the first time a star pitcher has been put in as a runner. Dizzy Dean was used more than once. So was Ted Lyons when he was the. Sox franchise. Field managers must be smarter than grandstand managers. Sometime I wonder. Anyhow, the Cubs showed the leading Phillies a thing or two. Maybe you can't beat fun at the old ball park, but a recent visit to the Fox Hole came highty close. Meeting good friends is right down my alley. Everything happened -- everything good. The Noonan girls took us into the kitchen to show us some baby ducks in a box under the stove. The mama duck left them behind so what was there to do but keep the little ones warm. Before we left I got two smackers from a couple of attractive young widows. How lucky can a fellow get? The Skyhawks had already beated. Beloit at home earlier, 7-5, and had hopes of pulling off a final victory. Beloit, on the other hand, had their hopes too and handed Johnsburg their 14th loss of the season, 10-9 in 9 innings. Johnsburg started things off in the first inning when Dave Hiller hit a hot shot to third base for a base hit. Kurt Valentin then unloaded for a two run home run, his second of the year, for a 2-0 Johnsburg lead. Beloit retired the next three Skyhawk hitters to get their tjirns at the plate. 'The Crusaders utilized their time well as they connected for 3 hits and 2 runs off Skyhawk pitcher Don Bentz. Neither team scored or hit the ball during the second in ning. However, consecutive hits by Rick Shiman, Don Bentz and John Olsson gave John sburg a 3-2 third inning lead. Don Bentz kept Beloit's bats silent throughout the third and fourth inning by retiring 8 of the 9 batters he faced. John Flood and Rick Shiman combined back to back hits for another run, and a 4-2 Skyhawk lead. In the fifth inning, Johnsburg had bases loaded, no outs but couldn't move anyone and left the inning with no runs. Beloit came alive jn the fifth inning by picking up three runs on four hits, all of the hits were singles. Johnsburg exploded in the sixth inning by smashing six hits for four runs. Dave Maurer and Dave Hiller each had hits and scored on a triple by Don Bentz. Bentz scored on a double by John Olsson. Tom Fowler then had a base hit that scored Olsson and the inning ended after Ed Koch hit a double. The score then stood: Skyhawks 8 - Crusaders 5. Beloit came back and tied the game, 8-8, in the bottom of the seventh. In the eighth inning, Tom Fowler led off with a base hit to left field. Scott Valentin moved Fowler to third base with a double. With men on second and third, the Skyhawks couldn't score and the game went into the ninth inning. Dave Maurer led off the inning with a base hit bunt and moved to second on a hit by Dave Hiller. Maurer socred on a single by Kurt Valentin and gave Johnsburg a 9-8 lead. Unfortunately Beloit came from behind and won the game M.C.C. The one day event of Tuesday, May 29 - Flag Day - produced the following win ners: Class A - Lynn Schmidt, Class B • Charlotte Zwissler, Class C • Jane Weiss, Class D - Betty Gossell. Low Nets were: Class A - Lyn Schmidt, 75, Class B - Char Zwissler, 75, Class C - Jane Weiss, 80 and Class D - Shari Weakman, 79. Low Putts in Class A - Alvina Yopp with 31, Class B - Mabel Smith with 29, Class C - a tie of 33 each for Maddie Holmes and Kitty Ballstaedt and in Gass D - Kitty Evans had 34. One birdie, that of Carol Cooney on no. 14, and several chip-ins were recorded. The chip-ins were by Mil Leisten on no. 2, Dot Shadel on no. 3 and Maddie Holmes on no. 6. With the weather as delightful as it was most of the women played good golf with a minimum amount of trouble. There were a couple of ex ceptions. Peg Anderson claims to have set a record for out-of- bounds on no. 5 - never men tioned what the attraction might be • probably spotted someone playing bridge in one of the yards along the fairway. And, Alta Gierke never did .discover what her ball hit in the creek to cause it to rise so high in the air. Well, I guess that's golf. A last minute reminder tomes from Dot Freund that Junior Golf begins at 12:15 on Monday, June 4. This is for boys and girls ages seven through sixteen. Next week will be for all the grandmothers and those who wish to be plus Beat the Champ. So, 'til next time. Happy Golfing! Liz in the bottom of the ninth on three base hits, 10-9. Beloit had 10 runs on 10 hits while Johnsburg gathered 9 runs on 23 hits. The Skyhawks end their season with a 7-14-1 record. On The Sidelines By Dick Robbitt Well the long spring season is finally over. All the rain, cold weather, postponements has finally come to an end. All the balls and bats, tennis and track equipment has been put to rest to await another day. The coaches are smiling, and like the rest of the teaching staff are waiting for the summer months. Congratulations to the tennis duo of Tim Sabatka and Rich Sund. These two had quite a time last weekend at the state finals in tennis at Arlington Heights. Eventually lost in the consolation round to the runnerup Deerfield team. A wealth of experience was gained by the boys, and their early season training paid off, when they played four matches on Friday, winning three and losing one. Likewise congratulations to Joe Bellich and Terri Bohlman. Both were named M.V.P. for the baseball team and softball team. Joe was the ace of the Warrior mound crew, and Terri was the catcher on the softball team. They, along with Sue Haddick, Brett Thomas and the Frantz brothers, Tim and Jim, also were selected on their respective All Conference teams. Quite a honor for the whole crew. Don't ever say that S.I.H. is not a dye in the wool Sox's fan. The genial Irishman along with Ken Swanson, Joe Bellich and myself journeyed to the game last Thursday night. The temperature was just above freezing mark. S.I.H. managed to pick up some tickets that had us practically on the field. He knows somebody. Even with the Sox's winning 10 to 1 in the late innings, he insisted that we stay to the finish. We actually thought that he was going to turn off the lights and lock the park up. To say the least he had us in stitches going to and from the ball park. We had a most enjoyable evening especially when our team won, and are looking forward to another trip, when the weather is a little more pleasant. Still no- - word on the new football coach for the Warriors. I'm sure it won't be too long before school officials make the announcement. Well this wraps it up for another year. On behalf of the Warriors we thank you for your support the past year, looking forward to a new season, and if the good Lord is willing we will be back in the fall. Have a good summer.
