The month of June has been declared Adopt-a-Cat month by the American Humane association, and the timing coincides with an abundance of the felines. There are color choices, males and females, long hairs and short, kittens and attractive young adults ~ something for everyone. The Helping Paws office 465 Virginia street, Crystal Lake, 459-2641, will supply kits con­ taining cat care books, an adoption certificate, and other information, with each cat adoption assuring the new owner will be well on the road to a smooth pet-owner relationship. In most households there's always room for one more and it's not too difficult to introduce a second kitten or cat to the household. It's the exception, not the rule when they do not get along after a brief in­ troductory period. But the owner must participate in the introduction to the extent of standing by watchfully until they are accustomed to one another, not leaving them alone together at first, and being impartial by treating each with equal attention and affection. Don't give them cause for jealousy. Also, the household centering around a dog can usually take in a cat without friction. Of course, they, too, must go through the preliminarv ad­ justment period and its best not to leave thefn alone together until it is clear they are getting along well. The cat fancier will go to great length to please a cat. A cat benefactress we know, has harbored and fed many cats over a period of years when they come to her threshhold. They must spread the word among the cat population because they find her place readily. One she calls her mama cat was exhibiting a disturbing lack of appetite just as she planned a brief trip. So she bought a package of shrimp and cooked them; then ex­ plained to her stand-in caretaker how much to fee ma­ ma cat. She departed feeling that mama cat might not make it and would be dead on her return, but when she came back she found a cat with appetite restored getting along fine. That act of extravagance (shrimp cost !!!) paid off well. The numbers of unwanted cats and kittens runs in the millions each year. Only a small percent are adopted. Help save a cat life. Adopt a cat.
