Lambaste RTA Proposal The average family in the six Chicago metropolitan area counties will pay 4.7 times more in RTA taxes if the present 5 percent RTA gas tax is replaced by a 1 percent RTA sales tax. "During the last year, the RTA gas tax cost motorists almost $73 million. That sounds like a lot, but it's a lot less than the approximately $350 million that a 1 percent RTA sales tax will cost," Rep. Cal Skinner, Jr. (R-McHenry county) reports. "When taxpayers give a local government more money, they are, in effect, telling the government that they like what that agency is doing and want more of the same," the McHenry county lawmaker observed. "Certainly, the RTA has failed to deliver on the 1974 promise of its proponents: 'Public transportation, when and where you need it, throughout the region'. "I contend that RTA will never be able to deliver upon that promise as long as Chicago controls it," Skinner said. Under the proposal, subur ban Cook county taxpayers will pay $134 million in RTA sales taxes. During the past year, they have paid $29.7 million in RTA gas taxes. McHenry county's $1.8 million in RTA gas taxes will leap to $5.9 million should a 1 percent RTA sales tax be enacted, according to Skinner. Skinner suggests that now is the time to contact one's state representatives senator if one doesn't think the RTA's proposed trade of a 5 percent sales tax on gasoline to a 1 percent sales tax on everything is fair. R A V I S H I N G R H O D O DENDRONS can brighten y o u r s p r i n g g a r d e n with beautiful blossoms. All rhododendrons must have a well-drained soil that is rich in humus and definitely on the acid side. You can get a fully budded bush in early spring, plant it and enjoy a magnificent show of flowers for years if it gets enough light. When the plant is firmly set in its planting hole, fill the hole with garden soil to which some humus--about 10 percent by volume--has been added. Mulch immediately. The mulch should be heavy enough to stay in place and open enough to admit air and water. The shrub should be planted up to the soil line on the trunk. Fertilize moder ately, once early each spring after the plant is well-rooted and again in midfall. Feeding phosphate can help increase the number of flower buds, as can occasional pruning.
