TILL 2:30 AT $1.25 More than 2,000 teachers belonging to the Illinois Education association descended on Springfield Wednesday lor the ninth annual lobbying drive. Mel Smith IEA president said. Smith indicated that this year's theme is "Kids and Schools - You Hold The Key ". He added, "That sums it up! The Illinois General Assembly must take the responsiblity for securing and allocating needed funding for our public schools." The IEA leader indicated that the efforts to secure a substitute for the corporate personal property tax are also of great interest to teachers throughout the state. "Our members will want to learn the status of bills to increase teacher retirement benefits and to cover school district staff reductions," Smith added The teacher spokesperson reported that over the years, the lobbying drive has been one of the most effective tools of the a s s o c i a t i o n . ' M a n y organizations have tried to muster their members in similar efforts, but ours has consistently been the largest and most productive," he declared. "While our corps of professional lobbyists is rated among the best in the state, IEA members still express a desire to meet with their respective legislators near the end of the session." the state association leader emphasized According to Smith, ,the lobbying drive serves a twofold purpose. First, both teacher- lobbyists and legislators have an opportunity to meet and discuss bills while the legislature is in session Also, the effort provides teachers an opportunity- to receive an orientation on the educational legislation enacted and that still pending "We're looking forward to one of our most successful efforts." Smith declared * • In Vostok, Antarctica, the temperature fell to"-127° F o n A u g u s t 2 4 , 1 9 6 0 .
