Carey Building Know ft/ - | /Wl 'PVfeather FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 20, 1929) Work was started on what promises to be McHenry's newest and largest subdivision to be known as McHenry's "Venetian Gardens". Due to the progressive foresight of some of McHenry's local men the land, which for more than 75 years has been covered by the waters of the mill pond, fed by Boone creek, is about to be reclaimed and will . be developed into one of the most beautiful and most modern subdivision outside of Chicago. This property was purchased by a syndicate of local men from the Borden company and wiULalso include the Lakeview sutrarvision which was pur chased by Kent & Company from William Bonslett several months ago. The subdivision will comprise about 256 lots, which will confortti to the city ordinance in size, containing about 6,000 square feet. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from tjie files of June 29, 1939) Construction of a $200,000 highway grade separation at the Crystal Lake "Y" located about 8 miles southwest of McHenry, it is hoped, will eliminate the innumerable fatalities and less serious ac cidents which have occurred at the hazardous intersection in the past years. Work on the project was begun this week. The "Y" marks the junction of routes U.S. 14 and 111. 31. Mrs. T. H. Belling, her threee children and several friends, had a narrow escape from drowning when the motor boat in which they were riding sank in the Fox river. The accident occurred near Emerald Park. Mrs. Belling was driving the boat at about 30 miles per hour when the engine suddenly died and the boat nosed under the water and sank. The Shamrocks defeated Volo in a slugfest by the score of 13-10. Harold Stilling led the attack for the Shamrocks while Joe Wagner led the futile attack for Volo, each collected three hits. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 24, 1954) McHenry's volunteer fire department is finding that it is even difficult to take an oc casional evening away from duties and enjoy dinner. Last Tuesday evening they were called to extinguish two fires, the first just as they were about to have dinner at the local Country club and the second as they were completing the meal. Excitement brought a crowd to the McHenry beach on Riverside drive when a young teen aged girl from Car- pentersville had to be helped to shore after high waves carried her under the surface for a few moments. Waves from a passing boat made the water rough and she became panicky when she swallowed a quantity of water. Wilbert Hecht, a state police officer, happened to be swimming nearby and after the girl's mother and brother brought her to shore he ad- m i n i s t e r e d a r t i f i c i a l respiration. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 20, 1969) At the regular meeting, McHenry's Police Chief Kenneth Espey presented the City Council with a plan to relieve traffic conjestion at Green and Elm by not allowing left turns during hours of peak traffic. Mayor Doherty also read a letter from John Shay, manager of the Green Street Mall association, recom mending that the Council give the plan a try. Acting in conjunction with the McHenry Chamber of Commerce, the City Council has passed a resolution naming Frank Low parade marshal for the city's Marine festival July 20. Mr. Low, whose energy and enthusiasm have spearheaded much of the activity of the summer event for the past twelve years, is honored by both organizations for his outstanding contribution to McHenry. Housing Development Appointments Governor James R. Thomp son recently announced two new appointments to the Illinois Housing Development authority. Names to the authority are Steven M. Raymond, 36, president of Executive Affiliates, Inc., Big Rock, a real estate management firm and Eugene Moats, 54, Chicago, president of Local 25, Service Employees International Union and an international vice president of the Service Employees In ternational Union. The un salaried positions require Senate approval. The Illinois H o u s i n g D e v e l o p m e n t authority finances new and rehabilitated housing for low and moderate income families, the elderly and handicapped, through a low-market-rate loan program to non-profit or limited dividend developers. The board of directors of the McHenry State bank have designated the new building at the intersection of Richmond road and Pearl street to be known as the Gerald J. Carey building. Mr. Carey served as chief executive office the McHenry State bank from 1926 until his death in 1972. The drive-in windows at the Carey building opened for business June 11, The facility is designed to accommodate six cars simultaneously and is expected to relieve traffic congestion in the center part of the city. The drive-in facility handled 1,772 separate tran sactions Friday, June 15, without any noticeable delay to the customers. Hie Gerald J. Carey building will also house the bank's bookkeeping, proof and auditing departments. The building, which provides three floors of office space, includes a lobby which will handle all banking transactions. The opening of the entire building will be delayed because finishing materials were damaged in shipment. The McHenry State bank also operates a drive-in facility and a small lobby at the in tersection of Lillian street and Crystal Lake road. Con struction will start soon on a permanent building to replace the temporary trailer. This location known as the Whispering Point facility is serving up to 500 customers per day. Ormel J. Prust, chairman of the Building committee, stated that future plans include an addition and a second floor to the main building. He said that this would not be started until after the two new facilities were in complete operation. Thomas F. Bolger, president of the bank, pointed out that even though both drive-in facilities are designed to handle most bank business, multiple transactions or large deposits are best accommodated in the lobby of the main building at 3510 W. Elm street. He also SUBSCRIBE To The McHenry Plaindealer stated that Illinois Banking law prohibits the making of loans at a facility. In respect to this law, the Carey building would be considered part of the main building because it is located on the same property. The Whispering Point location is not permitted to take loan ap plications but can accept payments, open accounts and receive all types of deposits. The Trust department, which is one of the fastest growing services, will remain at the main building. All three buildings have night depositories for the con venience of after hours deposits. Lightning, it is true, kills a number of people each year. Dangerous places are under a big tree, in the bathtub, or around or between metal objects--during a lightning storm. In the average all-metal SECTION 2 - PAGE I - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, JUNE 22,197t automobile, or in an all-metal airplane, you are safe. Lightning is caused by up- and-down drafts in thunder- heads which change the electrical composition of the air, building up cloud areas of positive or negative charge. Such a cloud area, coming near an oppositely-charged object, exchanges electrical charges with it. If you observe the light ning is active in the west, it will probably be upon you soon, but seeing it in other directions usually means it will not molest you. The old rule for judging the distance of lightning by counting the seconds is still valid. If you see the flash, count the number of seconds until you hear thunder. Then divide the seconds by five, because sound travels only a fifth of a mile a second. Your answer is the distance of the lightning from you-in miles. • • * • Faith and patience are great assets and wonder ful aids if you have them when you need them.
