tAGE I - PLA1NDEALER • FRIDAY. JULY ». HI) 9 EARL WALSH" - » . .. U ..." •J"° •: So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR. Say it isn't so. I watched the baseball All- Star game, but still can't believe the National League won by a score of 7-6. Fans saw plenty of action as players ' were substituted freely. That way the players didn't have to travel way out to Seattle just for the ride. Dave Parker's long throws from right field nailed two runners and killed American League chances. Of course, it was Bruce Sutter who really saved the game. When his fork ball "drops off the table," nobody can touch it. Come to think of it - why don't they step up on the pitch and then bunt it? We saw everything in that game. Even saw a fielder tag out a runner with his glove hand while he held the ball in his bare hand. Now that the game has just ended, I should call John Busscher to let him know I'll pay off the bet the first time we meet. Or, should I just try not to meet him? John should line up more sicker bets. I've only taken him on one bet in several years. ^Did you see how high the ball ided on that Seattle infield? was no such thing as _ a grounder on the shoi t h6p. Infielders could do nothing but wait for the ball to come dewn to earth. jjb E _ It seemed the players were pitting an all-out effort into the game. Sometimes you wonder attout those who dodge the g|me for any excuse. A legitimate excuse is one thing. A- poor excuse is something efee. After all, the player pension fufcd gets a good chunk of mpney out of the game each year. Jiow well I remember the year of the first All-Star game - 1983. The Century of Progress was a big attraction in those depression days so after I left a doctor's office, something drew me to the big fair. Instead of seeing the sights, I went directly to the Mayo Clinic display room to see if I could diagnose my ownv illness. Nobody else seemed able to1 do so. It was a joke later on to my close friends when they realized I passed up Sally Rand and her fans to go to the Mayo building. I must have been sick! ™ Met Bob Becker, former McHenry high athlete, at the Aeverman wedding an niversary. I always remember Bob as a snappy quarterback on Coach Reed's razzle-dazzle football team. Bob used to startle the op ponents and everybody else with surprise passes with his back to the goal line. A great lady is leaving McHenry after some 40 years of activity, Sister Andreella. Being a reader of S.I.H., she wrote a letter to me one time. My difficulty was that she wrote it in German. I went to see the late Bill Althoff to have him translate the letter, then write a reply for me - in German. It all seemed fine until the thought came to me that Bill might have written something that I hadn't intended. He was full of those tricks. Another time I pinned up a card near our editor's desk that read, "Anybody Who Likes Work Can Have A Hell of A Good Time Here"." Who should come in the next morning but Sister Andreella and another nun. "Mose" hadn't noticed the card and was flabergasted when Sister told him she thought she would like to work there. When she pointed to the sign, "Mose" said, "You know who put that up there, don't you?" With her musical talents, Sister Andreella contributed greatly to the culture of our community. She will be missed. Gymnastics Session At West Campus Parents may register their children and pay fee at West campus during normal business hours through Friday, July 20. In Class A it was J. Buss over M. Leisten and N. Fidler over A. Yopp; in Class B, C. Harger over S. Martin and M. Smith ova* B. Smith; Class C, E. Koehler over B. Rode; Class D, K. Evans over V. Spengel and P. MacDonald over G. Lewis. In Consolation tournament (running concurrently) with the field being smaller in Class A this week's play found C. Cooney downing D. Overton to emerge the winner. In the other Classes one week remains. In Class B it was C. Zwissler over E. Castle and L. Harpling over D, Freund; in Class C, T. Sayler over C. Bolger and J. Weiss on a bye; in Class D, B. Gossell over T. Gerstad and F. Herrmann over F. Miller. For the weekly statistics Floss O'Connell set a new low in putting by rolling in only 23 putts for the 18 holes. She also took low net of 74 in Class A. In Class B, Marilyn Riehan- sperger low putted with 27 while Carolyn Harger had low net of 76. In Class C, it was Gene Napier with low putts of 30 and a tie of 73 each between Carol Bolger and Jane Weiss for low net. Another tie of 32 each found Marcy Wakitsch and Gladys Warfield vying for low putts in Class D while Pat MacDonald stood undisputed for low net in the same class with 74. Only a couple of birdies were recorded • that of Joanie Buss on No. 4 and Nell Fidler's on No. 15. As Nell pointed out, she changed to the longer hole from her normal routine of birdieing on No. 14. And, the only chip-ins were executed by Marilyn Reihansperger on No. 3 and Sully Consago on No. 5. Sully apparently had a vigorous and exciting day from the report that was turned in by one of her golf mates. It seems that she was so intent on digging out of the sand trap on No. 12 that she really put her all into her swing, lost her balance and fell flat on her golf skirt. That's spirit! That did not, however, win her the title of "Sandy" for the week. That dubious honor went to Dot Freund as she found half the traps on the cdurse during her play. A report from the Nifty Niners showed that this week's rplay was a Team (net) Play event. The team of Melanie Frett and Carol Wakitsch took first place while the team of Dorothy Flynn and Marianne Cristy came in second. For third place there was a tie between the team of Bea Pond and Lorraine Young and the team of Shirley Smith and Pat Sullivan. Low Putts for the event were rolled in by Inez Burelli. - Friday the thirteenth proved to be anything but unlucky for the traveling team as they participated in the annual Fran 1 and Marlene Kruger of Otto's Girls Is safe at the plate as she scores from second, beating the throw to the Fashion Shoppe catcher Vlcki Senn. Otto's Girls won this Senior Division game of the Pigtail league by a 14-9 score at Petersen Park last week. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD -- Fawcett-Mary Killinger Low Net tournament held at Thunderbird in Barrington. Competing against eight other teams our local gals showed their true colors by capturing first place. In addition to the team's fine golf one of our ladies took low net over the entire field. Shooting a scratch 85 Virginia Turner took a net 63 to bring additional honors to the McHenry contingency. Congratulations, gals! A note from Ilaverne Gregory requests that mention be made of the annual McHenry County Cancer society's "Oh Shoot! Day" which will be held at Chapel Hill Golf course. The date is Aug. 6, a Monday, and will be a' shot-gun tee-off at 9 a.m. Tickets for this worthy event will include golf, luncheon and prizes and information regarding their purchase can be gotten by contactings Melanie Frett at 385-1736. With the popularity of this event growing each year it is ad- \- visable to make arrangements i for playing in it as early as ? possible. Well, even though some warm rains are sorely needed it is hoped that next Tuesday will bring some more sunshine on the day that Match Play will be concluded. The Bowl has scored in 77 in nings out of 118 batted or 65 percent of the time. Old Bridge has scored 75 out of 118 innings or 64 percent, Rusty Nail is 71 for 118 or 60 percent.
