What a way to start a new week! M Last week kept us busy editing sports stories. One , thanked everybody from here to kingdom come. Thank you a. notes are a No-No in news stories. i|- - Another advertised fees and MC prize money. No-No again. P< One note told us to run the story in the Friday issue. •> Trouble was it came in hours iy past the deadline. it* -- id One torn up part of a sheet of paper missed "Hie 13" by an eyelash. Another reporter included a note that his typewriter broke down so he had to turn in what f we call a "hand writ" story. Little Helen was the kitten on ihc keys, «£ki««g Jo Ann's place at the line-o-type [ machine. We handed the marked up to Helen and she waded i it like a true champion. Unliked her husband, Larry, Helen doesn't care a whoop about sports. On the opposite side is JoAnn. Like her husband, Bill, she eats I up sports news. Oh, that "Frenchy"! Eddie Bimbo and I listened to ' him tell that we will have a heavy snow in Sept. this year. Further the great forecaster predicts a worse '79- '80 winter than the past. All I know is what I hear. Since home run hitters drive Cadillacs, we see .230 batters swinging from their heels against smoke ball pitchers. So anxious are those kind to hit one into the next county that they won't even choke up on the bat with two strikes on them. It's great to have good neigh bors. Beet greens we like. So beet greens we got bom Mrs. Hanford. (I didn't {riant any this year). MIGHTY MINIS - At last count the Pirates in the Mini group of the Junior Youth League had a 13-2 record for the year. They have been in first place all year. Nice going, boys. Coach Gordon Stringer would have been one happy fellow if he could have joined some of his long ago athletes and (shall we say) students at lunch last Friday. See picture in this sports section. Would you believe? We tried for forty years to lure those fluttery little wrens into store-bought bird houses. No luck. Along came a more at tractive hand made house from Coach Stringer last winder. »V« uuw have a colony of those noisy, little fuss- buttons in the back forty. It seems our feathered friends won't live in any old house. They travel first class. Florida is going to claim another of our native sons. John Thompson, now of Burlington, Wise., tells us he is going to head south. John also told us he is a regular reader of the Plain- dealer. His aunt, Mrs. George (Kate) Worts, sends it to him. Now, that's nice. We got into a real nest of Cub fans recently. When Ed Blake's daughter, Kathy, asked how come the score was 9 to 0 when the Sox had to forfeit that riot game, he was quick to answer, "That's the score the Sox usually lose by." (How does one go about disowning relatives?) Earl "Flash" Walsh placed' basketball with these athletes, but says he never had any big time scouts following him around the circuit. (He says his claim to fame was being best man for both "Zeke" and Sib when they met their brides at the altar). It was a talk and laugh party as old yarns came to mind. All agreed that, God willing, this group will meet again next year. It was a grand time the above group enjoyed as they met for lunch and reminiscing last Friday at McHenry Country Club. "Zeke" Bacon returned from Arizona to his home town so it was a great chance for former schoolmates, teammates and friends to renew a lasting friendship. They noted that the ranks are thinning. Sib Whiting, Gus Freund, "Zeke" Bacon and "Marty" Conway all starred on McHenry High and town team basketball teams. And, lest we forget, were standout baseball players. Irene Trumble BASEBALL • • • • By Pete Fritchie WASHINGTON -- Sparky Anderson is taking his early lumps trying to make Detroit a contender "in the American League. After many years of Ralph Houk-building. this was finally the year the Tigers were to be a genuine con tender. „ When Sparky took over, the jury was still out. The Tigers were over .500 with Less Moss managing. They had zapped Baltimore in*a double-header, winning both games decisively and had taken a series from New York. But they were not the hot contender fans wanted. On the other hand, they were doing better than in many recent years. f.- Sparky, however, has found he doesn't have the pitching. The Bird is still out and Cincinnati retreads Jack Billingham and Milt Wilcox, though still good, aren't Mark Fidrych. Dave Rozema has faded--as he did last year. Thus Sparky is hurting for good, tight pitching. And as this is written he hadn't been able to get .500 ball from the Bengals. With one of baseball's best franchises, that isn't good enough, lt looks like a hard road for the new manager-until he finds both good starting and relief pitching.
