From left, are Susie Hielsky, Kathy Bitter man, Coleen Byrne, Chris Connell and Sue Haddlck. The girls played field hockey approximately nine hours a day. They learned many new skills that will benefit them during the coming field hockey season. They played many hours of coached hockey against teams from all over Illinois. While the girls were there, they were split up into teams. On Wednesday night there was a skill competition held and the girls from McHenry came in first place. Throughout the week a tournament was being held and the girls again captured first place by not losing a game during the whole week. Fox Hole and Hautzinger Concrete which are currently tied for second place in the McHenry League; the much improved Sunnyside Inn team; and, hard hitting Hiller Construction. The annual McHenry 16-Inch Softball tournament gets un­ derway this Friday evening at the McHenry VFW field on Route 120. Four games Friday night start the action which will continue on Saturday and Sunday. This is always one of the finest tournaments in the area during the summer and some of the best softball teams from the Chicdgoland area will be en­ tered. It will be a double elimination tournament. Added highlights of this year's tourney include an oldtimer's game, scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Any ex- McHenry League players (40 and over) wishing to play in the game should contact tourney director Paul Morenz at 385- 3252. Also scheduled for Sunday The big event which at­ tracted a large crowd last year, is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and will take place at Chapel Hill Country club, Monday, Aug. 6. That went fine until somebody saw the school superintendent walking down the road. Refreshments including cold beer, bratwurst and hotdogs and corn on the cob will be available at the field the entire weekend. So stop by the VFW field this weekend to watch some fine tournament softball, an oldtimer's game ^and the woman's league all-star game. Coffee and rolls will be served at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m. comes the Shotgun teeoff. Wonder Lake Golf Open At Hunter County Club Aug. 23 The town team used to play on that same diamond and there were some good teams in these parts. Every team had imports; ~ paid by those who gambled on the games. McHenry had a battery of imports, the pitcher being a humdinger. The big trouble seemed to be to keep him sober. To keep him in the game, they had to keep a bottle on the bench and give him a couple of snorts along about the fifth inning. One day when they couldn't snap him out of it, the catcher called him off the mound and traded positions with him. They got by OK. In those days, only one umpire worked the game as he stood in back of the pitcher. Later the town team played on a diamond down the hill (Third St.) from the old standpipe. One day a ball was hit into my Uncle Mike's garden and a couple of players went over the fence to search for it. Any Takers?
