AWWVWVWWVWWM Northern lllini Bowmen News The month of September has been proclaimed Leukemia month im Chicago by Mayor Jane M. Byrne, and in the State of Illinois by Governor James Thompson. This is the month in which citizens of Illinois will join forces with the Leukemia society by calling on neighbors and friends in support of the programs of the society. Forty thousand volunteers will participate, joining the more than a million volunteers nationally, headed by First Lady Rosalynn Carter as honorary chairperson in a massive effort to find the cause and cure of leukemia which takes the lives of more children than any other disease, and kills more adults than children. Research funding is the highest in the history of the Leukemia society, with 113 medical scientists now working in the total amount of $1,800,120. Proceeds from this campaign will go toward supporting these projects as well as continuing the support of the Patient Aid Program. Although progress is being made against leukemia and lives are being lengthened, it is estimated by the National Institutes of Health that leukemia and related disorders - lymphomas and Hodgkin's disease; will strike 55,000 Americans this year and take the lives of 36,000 men, women and children. Leukemia is a disease of the blood-forming organs. With blood drawn from Datients, leukemia can be studied more* closely than diseases involving other vital life functions. Then, hopefully, leukemia findings may be applied to seeking a cure for solid tumor cancer. This is the "countdown to cure". All the volunteers will bring this realization closer.
