Friends who celebrated with John were James Wayman, Mike Sweeney, Heather and Tracy Prazak, Mike Boyle, Kevin, Brian and Suzi Moore, and John's sister Antoinette and younger brother Robert. Mom, Sharon, and Anne Moore enjoyed their lunch, watched the rain and prayed for sun. The Lord heard their prayers, the sun came out and all went swimming down at East Beach. Happy birthday, John! And birthday wishes to Kevin Moore who had his day on Tuesday, August 14, and to Brian Moore, who celebrates his eighth birthday on Aug. 19. NEW GRANDMOTHER On Monday, August 6, Mrs. Erna Saari became a member of a very select group. - It's known as the grandmother's club. The way she got into this select club was when her daughter Jayne and son-in-law Jerry Skuta became the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl. With the arrival of Lori, Rich and Jack became first-time uncles. . VACATION FUN The Moore's recently spent their vacation in Crivitz, Wis., visiting with the Warrens who were spending two weeks. On Anne's first attempt at water skiing, her wedding ring < flew from her finger into the lake. Five days later Julie Warren was swimming and something shiny caught her eye. Thinking it was a bottle cap, she reached down and was very surprised to find Mrs. Moor's wedding ring. Kevin, Brian and Suzie en joyed swimming, sailing and fishing with Joel, Julie and Emily Warren, while the parents Anne and Steve, Sue and Bruce enjoyed the quiet evenings and the cozy camp- fires. OLD HOME^EEK Lester and Mary Dobbins were host and hostess with the "Mostess" this past week when they had old time friends coming to visit them all week. Every couple of mornings the doorbell would ring and someone from out of the past would be standing outside. One morning it was Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Schar of Stromhurst, 111., and Arlington Heights visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Kostsk and Bob Allison. Lester had not see Bob since sixth grade. During that week the Dobbins also had a house guest. Their grandson, Todd Iddings, had come up .from Florida to stay with grandparents. McHenry's Vthird-Saturday- of-every-month recycling drive will be held this Saturday, Aug. 18, at the McHenry Market Place parking lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students from the Alternative high school will be on hand the day of the drive to work along with the McHenry County Defenders unloading cars and seeing that the recyclable materials brought in are properly prepared for the next step in the recylcing process. The funds earned by the Alternative high school through the efforts at this recycling drive will be put into its activity fund for the coming year. Anyone interested in learning more about the Alternative high school can check with the teachers who will be working along with the students the day of the drive. The need to conserve energy and natural resources is in creasing day by day. The public is asked to help by watching consumption of overpackaged products and by getting in volved in recycling the materials that come into the household. There are 17 regularly held recycling drives in McHenry county with an estimated participation of 9,400 in dividuals. Those who are not among them are encouraged to join the growing group of recyclers by bringing properly prepared materials to the McHenry Market Place this Saturday. Following is a list of some guidelines that may be helpful to old and new recyclers alike: ^ Newspapers- should be tied in both directions in bundles 8 to 10 inches high or placed neatly into strong, brown paper bags. All plastic bags should be removed. Wet paper is not acceptably since newspaper is processed immediately upon unloading and must be dry. Recycled baling twine is available for those who would like to take some home with them. Magazines and corrugated cardboard- should be bundled separately from • the newspapers since they are sold to different outlets. Glass bottles and jars -- should be clean and have all metal and plastic removed. Paper labels do not need to be removed. Do not pre-crush glass. All-steel cans- should be rinsed out, have labels removed, bottoms cut out and cans flattened to conserve space. Aluminum- should be separated from the all-steel cans since they are processed through different plants. All- aluminum beverage cans usually have "all-aluminum" or "recyclable aluminum" written on them. They can also be recognized by the yery shiny, no-seam construction on the base of the can. If in doubt, use a magnet, for a magnet will not stick to the side of an all- aluminum can. Used motor oil- should be in plastic jugs with a secure lid. The Illinois Department of Energy estimates that close to 16 million gallons of oil are purchased in this state by do-it- yourself oil changers. Since February of this year the McHenry recycling drive has been accepting used motor oil. Forty-five to fifty gallons have been delivered to the drive each month This oil is then re- refined, saving approximately 65 percent of each gallon. For further information, call the McHenry County Defenders representative at 385-8512. Down To Earth Negro scientist George Wash ington Carver achieved wonders with the humble peanut. He used to tell this story about his accomplishments: When I was young I said to God, "God, tell me the mystery of the universe. But Grbd answer ed, "That knowledge is reserved for Me alone. "Sol asked God to tell me the mystery of the peanut,̂ to which he replied: "Well, George, that's more near by your size. " Observe Irish Day De Paul, Loyola, Nor thwestern, University of Chicago and St. Xavier are some of the major universities and colleges participating in this year's Family day to be held Sunday, Aug. 29, at Chicago's Navy pier. On that day, the University of Chicago will display its unique collection of Irish artifacts for public viewing. The collection includes a replica of the beautiful Eighth century, two handled Ardagh silver chalice which was used for dispensing wine at Communion. Also in eluded in this collection will be the large ring brooch, known to be created about 700 A.D. and since the Nineteenth century, popularly known as the Tara brooch.
