N Safety Hints By Alan J. dixon Secretary of State Motorcycles and motorbikes have become increasingly popular, not only for recreational purposes but also as economical modes of transportation. Current fuel shortages and warm summer weather have placed an ever growing number of cycle en thusiasts on our streets and highways. Additional safety measures should be observed when you are on the same roadway with a motorcycle. Remember that the motorcyclist has the same right-of-way privileges you do and that he is entitled to the same courtesy and con sideration. ^Motorcycles are sometimes difficult to see because drivers are accustomed to looking for something larger. Be sure to watch for them in oncoming traffic before you start to make a turn. Don't crowd a motorcycle. Allow more following distance than you do for a car. A motorcycle often can stop faster than your car because it is much lighter in weight. Also, getting too close may make the cyclist nervous and cause him to lose balance and fall in front of you. Allow even more following distance between your vehicle and a motorcycle in bad Special Clinics Scheduled Since schools may exclude students who are not fully immunized, clinics are being scheduled by the McHenry County Department of Health to assist parents in obtaining the shots required by the school code. Additional immunization clinics will be held Aug. 21 and 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. in Room 101 of the courthouse. A parent must accompany the child to read the in formation and sign the permit for each .injection. No ap pointment is needed. They are asked to go to the clinic in the nursing division of the Health department with the record of previous immunizations, or the record from school identifying the injections needed. Any child who has not been immunized for any reason must be excluded from school the morning after a disease which the child is not immunized against occurs in that school. Monthly immunization clinics continue to be held on the last Wednesday of each month from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Newman Club Serves MCC SOLIDLY BUILT - PRICED TO SELL-OUT! MS4M1 The Newman club at McHenry County college, as it is popularly called on a public school campus, is a Catholic community of students and faculty. The Newman club is dedicated to the service of human needs, committed to witness and administering connection with other com munities. Rev. John C. Holdren, who is in his fifth year as chaplain and director of Newman club, states, "Newman club strives to lead its members to understand how profoundly in the Eucharist and in Christian action human beings can realize their unity. A primary concern is the spiritual development of the members to study and to learn to turn their love and insight into the campus and the world at large." Throughout the years Newmans club has been in existence, it has attempted to promote and develop Chrisitan friendship through spiritual and intellectual and social weather. If wet pavement causes you to slide or the motorcyclist to fall, you may not be able to avoid an ac cident. (A copy of the Rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Alan J. Dixon, Secretary of State, Springfield, 111., 62756) activities for their friends. Catholics and The club is recognised for its ability to congregate young people representing numerous i n t e r e s t s , o c c u p a t i o n s , professions, who would otherwise be denied these . contacts due to the diversity of living. The Campus Ministry attempts to fill the role in a variety of ways, through religious services, assisting those of no particular con fession to express their beliefs in action, counseling, and sharing the Word of the Gospel. SAFETY STENSE Smart motorcyclists usu- ually come to their (safety) senses before--not after--an accident. They know that head injuries account for a majority of motorcycle fa talities. So they wear helmets to help reduce the likeli hood of a head injury or its severity. \ 11^- Your helmet will help you head off trouble--if you keep it in top condition. In case of a really severe impact, the hard, outer shell should be partially destroyed. That's because it absorbs part of the shock before it gets to the inner lining--and your head! So don't reuse your helmet -SPENGEL MEAT PACKING CORPORATION Where the TOP Area Restaurant's Buy their Meat" U.S. GOVT. INSP. EST. The Motorcycle Safety Founda tion points out that even an unintentional dropping of the helmet may partially weaken the shell. Motorcycle drivers who use CB radios may be tempt-s, ed to drill tiny holes into their helmets for miniature speakers. For safety's sake, don't! Those holes tend to spread, reducing the pro tection that your helmet affords you. If you wear your helmet every time you ride, youW heading in the right direction. PAGE 5-PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. AUGUST, 17, 187S Auto Service Tips If your battery fails and you install a new one, also check the alternator regulator to determine if it caused battery failure. A malfunctioning regulator will allow a battery to overcharge, which leads to plate buckling and, of course, battery failure. When the new battery is connected, test no-load voltage at the battery posts engine running at 1500rpm and ail electrical equipment turned off. A reading of more than 14.8 volts means you need to replace the regulator -- and test the new one. too.
