The final round will be played next week and will produce not only the Club champion but both low gross and low net champions in each of the flights. Played over a three- week period, the event is a test of endurance, sportsmanship and spirit and the gals are to be commended for being the ladies they are and hanging in Bonnie skies and fair winds there when the golf gremlins DIVOT DOLLS M .C.C. oft times do lead to less than sensational golf. Again, with a few exceptions, the scores , turned in by the ladies at A McHenry County Club on Tuesday were less than daz-f;^ zling as the second rotind of \ Club and Class Championship J was played. Coming back to her '"' attack and the shots do not always go as they were in tended. Number 14 continues to be the most popular hole for accomplishing the feat, wit nessed by Vi Turner, Maddie Holmes and Jackie Victor. Vi flso birdied no. 4 and Carol Cooney birdied no. 3. Two birdies were registered on no. 18 by Charlotte Zwissler and Kitty Ballstaedt. Kitty laid her drive up to within 2 inches of the cup to sltVe herself from a hole-in-one: Always a golfer- pleaser is the chip-in of an approach. Happiness reigned for Lorraine Gosden on no. 6, for Joanie Schloskey on no. 5 and no. 16, for Floss O'Connell on no. 12, and for Freida Miller and "Betsy Ross" Phelan on no. 16. Incidently, it's good to see Betty back on the course after her long absence. The only untoward moment witnessed was that of Virginia Spengel's shot across the creek on no. 8. Virginia was living dangerously as she played skip- skip-skip across the water. Well, I guess "it ain't how you do it" after all. The report from the Nifty Niners notes that Lorraine Gausden chipped in on no. 6, Martha McCrary parred no. 9 and Lorraine Young had low putts of 13. The three-week championship play ended this day with Dorothy Hollander the winner in Class A and Carol Wakitsch the winner in Class B. By the time this goes to press the Fifth Annual McHenry Women's Invitational will be under way. It is hoped that many of the readers will be in the gallery to observe some of the finest women's amateur golf being played. 'Til next time. Happy Golfing! Liz McHeniy Country Club By John Busschner The rain delayed first round of the Club Championship was played at the club on Sunday, August 12. First round leader ftt the club championship with a fine even par round of 71 is Ed Buss, followed by Gary Adams with 74. Defending champion Art Jackson had a round of 75, followed by Kurt Knaack with a 76. Other scores were in the high 70's and 80's. In the handicap club championship, Jack Smithson posted a fine 78 and with a 13 handicap has a net of 65 which is good enough for a three stroke lead over Ed Cepulis, who had a 79-11-68, and Bob Rager with a score of 87-19-68. Fred Ballstaedt also posted a net of 68 with a round of 82-14. Jim Gillette leads the senior handicap championship with a round of 90-26-64. Word has it that Jim received a few pointers from his pal Bob Blaney but after looking over the scores it seems Bob was the one i who needed help, One shotT behind at 86-21-65 is Earl Brown, followed by Mike Hori with 86-18-68 and Hal Nilles with 85-17-68. Dick Warfield at 83-14-69 and Frank Johnson with 78-9-69 are very much in contention as we go into the second round of play on Sun day, August 19. Because of the cancellation of the first round on August 6 the third round will be played on Saturday, August 25 with the fourth round on Sunday, August 26. jj== : CHAPEL HILL Roflstor ••Win FREE GRAND PRIZE DRAWING LITTON MICROWAVE (No Purchase Necessary) ^ Oldtif Dflftd Cflrty Appl, OOLF CLUB NOW DOOKINO GOLF OUTING: and GOLF LEAGUES FOR 1U0 SEASON R O A S T H O G R O A S T C O R N Soles Serving McHenry for Over 50 Years CAREY Appliance Service 1241 N.
