Lions Visit Leader Dogs Members of the board of trustees of the Lions of Illinois foundation visited Leader Dogs for the Blind recently and were met with* blindfolds. "It was our way of finding out, if only for a short while, a little of what a blind person might face," said Guy J "Bill" Lomax,a Leaf River insurance agent and president of the board. Wives also were blindfolded. The guests all spent time learning what it felt like to have a dog as a companion and partner, walking in a dark world. Leader Dogs for the Blind, Rochester, Mich., is the largest guide dog school in the world. It is one of the recipients of an nual grants awarded by the Lions of Illinois foundation, 1515 N. What is the maximum temperature of a cold front? Cold fronts occur in every month in the year. We might have more of them to pass over us in August than in January. What misleads many about cold fronts is the very name itself. But in summer a cold front might contain (behind the leading edge) air of 72 de grees, or even 80 degrees. A cold front is so-named because of its relative temperature con sidering the time of year and prevailing weather conditions. August, this year, has al ready experienced several cold fronts. If the temperature has been reaching 90 degrees or more for several days and a mass of air moves in and over, with temperatures of 80 de grees or less, weathermen will call it a cold front. AMAZING GRAIN PRODUCTION FACTORY The reproductive stage of a. corn plant commences somewhere between 50 and 75 days after emergence, depending primarily on the maturity rating of the hybrid you planted and growing conditions - especially tem perature. Short season, early maturing hybrids reach this stage in 50 to 55 days whereas a full season, later maturing hybrid may require as many as 75 days. Warm temperatures increase the rate of growth and development while cool tem peratures retard it. The most rapid growth and development of corn occurs at about 86 degrees F. Temperatures above or below that optimum slow the growth rate. All during this time the plant is building a grain production factory consisting of a full- grown tasseled plant eight to 10 feet tall with 15 to 17 full-sized leaves (two or four lower leaves will die and waste away by pollination time ~ they have no function because they-re completely shaded by the leaf canopy above). In addition to impressive vegetative growth, the plant has inititated a tassel plus one or more ears and the potential kernels that may later develop on those ears. It takes kernels, and lots of them, to produce yield. Everything that is done to help plants get the greatest number of kernels started and matured will result in higher yield, That's the reason proper nutrition, moisture, and pest control are so important right from the start. There's a great deal of un seen below-ground activity going on, too. Roots provide both mechanical support and the means of moving plant nutrients and water into the system. Between the 40th and 50th day, root system length doubled and at day 60 (about mid-pollination) total root length of each plant was over 2,000 yards. Tassel appearance signals an end to vegetative growth and the beginning of reproduction. A tasseling corn plant actually has several ear shoots on each stalk - we commonly find about six in cur examinations. Normally the topmost ear shoot will dominate and go ahead and develop. The next one below it may develop later , if growing conditions are favorbale. The rest of the ear shoots, further down the stalk, usually fail. Development of two ears per stalk indicates that the stand is thin and-or that the growing conditions have been good. Prolific type hybrids have a greater tendency to develop the top two ears, probably due to a genetic difference that causes the plant to send food to two ears equally rather than to the top one only. Corn with inherent prolific tendncy is less prone to barrenness when growth at high populations. The success of pollination depends a great deal on PAGE 21 -PLAINPEALER weather, timing, insects, and the hybrid. Usually there is a great excess of pollen produced and released. If weather is very hot and dry, pollen may be killed before it is effective. More often, poor pollination is the result of various plant stresses that allow the tassel to go ahead and shed pollen but slow or prevent development of ear shoots so that there are few receptive silks when the pollen is flying. Stress tolerant hybrids are least affected and are characterized as being able to pollinate successfully even if growing conditions are less than perfect. In normal situations, silks will emerge and become receptive about three days after the same plant starts to shed pollen. If weather conditions are unfavorable, there may be more than a WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 22,1»JI three-day spread. It is an in dication of real stress in the field if you find little or no sim emergence six or seven days after pollen has been flying. The maximum number of kernels that will develop is determined by the success of pollination. Later growing conditions determine how many of these will survive to mature and how heavy eaQh kernel will be. What you haul from the field in the way of final yield is set by the number of mature kernels and the weight of each. & Healthy, virgorous plants plus favorable moisture and temperatures at pollination time go a long way toward determining final yield. Im proved conditions after pollination cannot make up for potential yield reduction due to poor seed set.
