BLOCK PARTY The residents of the Em- berwood East subdivision of Sunnyside held a block party on Sunday, Aug. 12. They had Williams avenue blocked off for the day by the Sunnyside police department. Each homeowner contributed to buy ham burgers, hot dogs, beer and pop. All the wives then made a dish to pass around and everyone had a great time. They played volley ball, soft ball, horse shoes and in general just had a good time. This is the first annual block party. Goodwin, associate administrator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), has asked the public to com ment by Sept. 18 on proposals for the 1980 corn and sorghum programs and the soybean loan rate. Although the secretary of Agriculture is not required to make most of the program determinations for the three commodities before Nov. 15, he has set the Sept. 20 comment deadline so that the programs may be announced earlier than the statutory date if he determines it desirable to do so, Goodwin said. Comments are requested for the following determinations for corn and sorghum: -the amount of the national program acreages; -the reduction from the previous year's harvested acreage required to guarantee established (target) price protection on the. total 1980 planted acreage ; -whether there should be a set-aside requirement and, if so, the extent of the set aside; -whether there should be a land diversion program and, if so, the extent of such diversion and the level of payment; -if a set-aside or land diversion program is required, whether a limitation should be placed on planted acreage; -the established (target) prices; -the loan and purchase levels for 1980 crops of corn, sorghum and soybeans; and -other related actions such as: Commodity Credit cor poration minimum sales price, commodity eligibility, storage requirements, premiums and discounts and other provisions as may be necessary to carry out the programs. Before reaching his decision, the secretary will consider any recommendations and views regarding the proposed determinations. To be assured of con sideration all written com ments must be received no later than Sept. 18 by the Director, Production Ad justment Division, ASCS, USDA, Room 3630-S, P.O. Box 2415, Washington, D C. 20013. All comments will be available for public inspection at the office of the director during regular business hours. On June 6 the public was asked to comment on the 1980 barley and oats programs along with a request for poblic comment on the wheat program.
