Following last week's suc­ cessful opening, the cast, crew, and orchestra of the county- wide organization is gearing up for the second week's opening on Friday evening. Pippin, the winner of five Tony awards in 1973, is the musical fable about the em­ peror Charlemagne and his son, Pippin, It follows Pippin from one adventure to another as he searches for meaning in his life. "We were very pleased with the audience response to the show," said Youth Theatre Director Tony Casalino. "It is an unusual kind of show, but our audiences seemed to really enjoy our first four per­ formances. Tickets are still available for this weekend's performances, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Reser­ vations can be made by calling the Opera House ticket office. School will open Sept. 3, the day after Labor day, and the teachers have been hired and everything is in readiness for another busy year at these institutions of learning. John Wirtz, Jr., gave his life in an effort to save the life of a young girl who had fallen overboard from the boat "Gladola" on a trip to the Lotus Beds. Wirtz was known as a powerful swimmer but was forced to battle against waves of icy water and when about 30 feet from the girl his progress ended and he sank from sight. The largest registration in the history of McHenry Com­ munity high school was recorded at the close of the two days set aside for this purpose. A total of 226 ambitious students filled out their cards and were assigned to their respective classes. For the past few years the enrollment has hovered around the 200 mark and the highest previously reached was 213. A jury in the County court returned a verdict of $6,750 in favor of Henry'Felmeten, Jr., in the condemnation suit filed by the Department of Public Works for the purchase of 15.5 acres of land located on the Fox river near the McHenry dam for a state park site. Besides building a state park at this site it is also planned to rebuild the dam, which is already in progress. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of August 24, 1954) Ray McGee, McHenry postmaster, was awarded the beautiful medal for citizenship at the Veterans of Foreign Wars carnival. When public schools convene Sept. 7 there will not only be a record number of new students but also a number of new faces in the ranks of the faculty. Some of them are additional staff members and others are replacements for teachers who have left the local school system. The old story that a ball game is never over until the last man is out was never truer than shown on the local diamond when the Johnsburg Tigers rose up in the ninth inning to turn a 3 to 0 shutout into a 4 to 3 victory. TEN YEARS (Taken from the files of August 20, 1989) Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hopkins and their four children left11' McHenry for Europe, where ' they will live for a year while Hopkins does research on mass communications. Hopkins will be studying under a fellowship of the Alicia Patterson* fund, which annually awards grants for several American jour­ nalists for travel and research abroad. Hopkins has worked as a Soviet affairs specialist for the Milwaukee Journal since 1964. Sheriff John C. Carroll said that on his notification the State Division of Narcotics Control, spray detail, came to McHenry county recently and sprayed an area of approximately 400 acres spotted with patches of wild marihuana growing at random. This was the second year of the county has been visited by this department. There is no charge to the county for this service. According to County Treasurer Cal Skinner, Jr., McHenry county has reduced the taxes of many persons whose bills were processed in July. They are from 13-21 years old and will spend from six weeks to nine months here. All students are sponsored by the Iber- oamerican Cultural Ex­ change program, a U.S. State department authorized ex­ change-visitor program. The primary objectives of these foregin exchange-visitors are to make new friends, to be accepted as a member of a typical American family, to learn first hand about life in the United States, and to improve their ability to speak and un­ derstand English.
