WThe other instructor, Jay tteardon, is a captain in the ftoffman Estates Fire rtment and teaches a fire ety course at the college. Reardon set up the demon- nation in a gravel pit in Ifoffman Estates with men Irom his department on hand to put out the fires after it was OVer. t Jusing a junk car, they put ii/ one gallon of gasoline in a closed two-gallon can inside a closed car trunk. They detonated the explosion with a small explosive which they calculated was equal to the force of a car hitting another at 30 miles an hour. "It was like a fender bender," Hranac said. The force of the explosion threw the car trunk high into the air and in just a matter of seconds the interior of the car was gutted with flames. The demonstration was videotaped by Joe Cornelia^ audio-visual electronic coor dinator at MCC. Watching the videotape, or even looking at photographs of the explosion, is enough to make you think twice about taking gasoline anywhere inside your car. Hranac explains that gasoline has a habit of ex panding and escapes even from a tightly sealed can. If the can if full and the temperature rises enough either the can will break, or the gas fumes will escape around the top seal. The car trunk is actually the worst place to carry gasoline, fie said, both because it is a closed, airless space which gets warmer than the rest of the car and because it is actually inside JOHN E. The trunk is only separated from the passengers and driver by fabric or fiber- board at the best, Hranac said. Reardon plans to record a narration for the videotape which also shows what happens when a car gas tank catches on fire and what happens when a car is blown up using dynamite. But the most impressive explosion on the film is the one involving the gasoline. "Ex perts say that the force of one gallon of gas is comparable to 17 sticks of dynamite ex ploding," Hranac said. Both instructors plan to use the film in their classes and Hranac said that once the narration is done the film could be made available to other groups or individuals. While warning against transporting gasoline, Hranac admits that sometimes it is necessary, such as when you need gas for your lawn mower. In those instances, he suggests <you put the can in the front seat, open all the windows, refrain from smoking and drive straight home from the gas station. * * * * Most people can't think with their mouths open, and most of them find this no serious hand icap. • * • • I The sure way to im prove the quality of elected officials is to raise educational standards of the voter. r -vs- JAMES H. ELM ST.-McHENRY •r Perspective RADICAL SHIFT By RONALD REAGAN In the 31 years since the World Council of Churches was founded in Amsterdam, the organization has gone from being a sort of "voice of con science" urging Christians to apply their principles to political problems to an in discriminate supporter of Marxist terrorists. What happened? Ernest W. Lefever, in an impressive new book titled "Amsterdam to Nairobi: the World Council of Churches and the Third World." traces the radical change in the WCC's composition and method of operation. Initially the group was comprised of 152 member churches, mostly from North America and. Western Europe. "Today", says Dr. Lefever, "its cotter of gravity, like that of the U.N. General Assembly, has shifted to the Third World". Between WCC assemblies (Amsterdam was the first; Nairobi - in 1975 - the latest) decisions are made by the 135- member Central committee, in which Third World and Marxist state representatives out number those of the West. According to Lefever, "In recent years the term Third World' has taken on an ideological meaning that focuses on grievances against the West. From this per spective, Third World people still suffer from past Western colonial control and are also being oppressed by 'neo colonialism', trans-national corporations and even 'im perialist' Christian missionary efforts. When you combine Third World paranoia with what London's Institute for the Study of Conflict calls the "Western churches" obsession with guilt of the individual for the sins of society", you get such things as last year's WCC grants to the Rhodesian guerrilla terrorists (who were murdering, among o t h e r s , C h r i s t i a n missionaries), to SWAPO (Southwest Africa Peoples Organization), the externally- based Marxist guerrilla outfit that is trying to seize control of Namibia, and you get support for the Marxist regime in Angola. These grants created a firestorm of disapproval from Christians in many lands. Three members (including the Salvation Army) Withdrew from the WCC and others curtailed their contributions. Dr. Lefever concludes that "on the long road from the Amsterdam assembly to the Nairobi assembly, the WCC has moved from a largely Western democratic concept of political responsibility to a more radical ideology that...embraced the concept and practice of 'liberation thelogy' (which) bears a striking resemblance to Marxism." What is to be done about the excesses of the World Council of Churches? \ Professor Lefever makes several specific and thoughtful recommendations. For example, "The WCC should sharpen its understanding of the different but com plementary functions of church, state and citizen. It should speak to society by making broad moral judgments against gross evils like genocide, not by giving specific policy advice better left to individual Christians and other citizens with respon sibility for political and economic decisions." All of Lefever's recom mendation are reasonable; however, if those who dominate the WCC today were reasonable, they would not be sending money to terrorists who kill civilians and missionaries. For now, it seems to me, the best opportunity for reforming t h i s r a d i c a l l y - m i n d e d organization which has so distorted the teachings of Christ is for individual church goers to make sure that none of the financial support they give their own church goes to the WCC where it may end up as a bullet in a terrorists's gun. Choral Group In Rehearsal The first session of the Northern Illinois Choral association will be held at McHenry County college, Route 14, northwest of Crystal Lake, Monday evening, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. Old members and new members will get acquainted and plans for the Christmas concert will be discussed. Members of the Choral board of directors urge all interested singers to attend this meeting and become members themselves. The Northern Illinois Choral association was founded by Margaret M. Griffith. In 1978, Ms. Griffith passed her baton to Judith Williamson, a choral director, organist and music instructor for the past 25 years. This year, the Northern Illinois Choral group will be under the direction of William E. Murray of Morgan Park. He graduated from Hamilton cbDege with1 an" Ab, then con tinued at the American Con servatory for his Master's degree in church music.
