Bright Prospects Skyhawk Golf For Johnsburg Team Hampered Cross Country The Johnsburg Skyhawks lost two of jtheir top cross country stars when they graduated last year; but according to coach Bob Texidor, there are some very bright prospects In the offing. Jim Smith, last year's cross country team captain and MVP, graduated. "Jim was our top man," noted Texidor. "He was a consistent runner and he placed 16th in the county and district meets. We also lost senior Juha Vester, who was a good runner and filled in the gaps." \ This season the team's two top runners are underclassmen. Freshman Jay Jackson is a standout. He is already approaching some of the best times set by members of last year's varsity squad. Sophomore Mike Steck, is also one of the fastest runners on the squad. Lettermen returning from the 1978 cross country squad are Jim Flood and Tom Schoenig. Also back from last year are Juniors Bob Baker and Dan Willis. "I think we'll do better than last year," says Texidor. "I feel that we may win a couple of close meets. We may do better in bigger meets because of outstanding individuals. We do lack depth and wide range of abilities. In cross country, one has to bunch up his team. This will have to wait until all are in better condition. Other members of the squad include Rick Klein, Steve Knight, Adam Klein, Frank Jakubicek, Mark Hartwick, Chuck Novy, Paul Pease, and Jeff Fowler. Rick Keber, Johnsburg high school golf coach, has the most youthful varsity team in the history of the school. His squad is composed of five sophomores and four freshmen. Tom Pieper, a sophomore, is the team's best golfer. According to Coach Keber, Pieper, who is also a basketball standout, has the potential to win the conference. Dooley Stanell is another sophomore who has high potential, according to the coach. Last year the Skyhawk golf team did not win a match. The lack of experience will remain a tremendous barrier for the team to overcome this year. Other members of the golf team include sophomores Tom Young, Kevin Sowial, Rich Kretzschmar, and freshmen Paul Staib, Kevin Uttich, Dan Kiernan and Steve Maack.
