McHENRY PLAINDEALEE-PAGE 15-WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12. 1979 Eleven Lettermen Return To Skyhawk Tennis Johnsburg high school girls' tennis coach, Connie Sanders, is looking at a lot of young talent this year. Of the 11 returning lettermen, only two are seniors. Last season the tennis team tallied a 3-8 record. Almost all of the varsity squad was lost through graduation. Gone are last seasons' senior leaders Lisa Jackson, Kristi Stanell, Karen Szumlas and Darlene Mann. Stannell became the first Johnsburg athlete to go to state in a sport. Lettermen who are returning this year include seniors Sue Pfendert, Karen Grenman, juniors Linda Pfendert, Kim Grenman, sophomores Kathy Szumlas, Terri Jakubicek, Darcy Relle, Tracy Esposito, Angie Ciura, Deb Reese and Deb Jayco. "Tennis ought to be a very deliberately planned game," says Sanders. "Patience is required in waiting for the right moment to attack." REMEMBER SKYHAWK PARENTS MY SATURDAY, MY. 3 YS. McHENRY PHONE 385-7500 Volleyball: The Skyhawk Picture Looks Bright The 1978-79 girls' volleyball team at Johnsburg high school was one of the school's most successful fall sports. The team posted an overall 9-13 record and won fourth place in the conference with a 5-7 record. This year the picture looks even brighter. "We are definitely starting out better this year than last," according to Coach Carol Kanetzke. "We have experience, we know what to expect from our opponents, and most of our opponents lost more seniors than we did.", Two of the star athletes that Kanetzke did lose through graduation were Rocky Rieck, one of the top spikers and captain of the team, and Jackie Wolf, a talented setter and co- captain. "Both girls were the only ones on the team last year with varsity experience, and they were definitely team leaders." Four returning lettermen should help provide the leadership for the current squad. They are: seniors Lora Jacobs, Debbie Herdrich, Liz Stoffel and junior Inge Dschida. "Our goal for offense is to develop a bump-set-spike pattern so that every ball we return to our opponents is placed with power," explains Kanetzke. "We are using a double block with our defense to hopefully stop the opponents' spikes or take the speed off the spikes." Kanetzke considers offense to be one of the team's strengths. She notes that the team has consistent spikers and servers. "Reaction time - especially in picking up spikes -- is one of our weaknesses now," says Kanetzke. "This should develop and improve during the beginning of the season". Coach Kanetzke is also on a crusade this season to promote more fan support for volleyball. "One of our goals this season is to get the student body and parents more interested and involved with the games," she says. "The district tournaments are being held at Johnsburg this year and we need the enthusiasm and support of the community". Girls volleyball is one of Johnsburg high school's most successful fall sports and shown here are three of the four returning lettermen from last year's team and their coach. From left to right are: Coach Carol Kanetzke, Inge Dschida. Lora Jacobs and Liz Stoffel. Missing from the picture is Debbie Herdrich.
