McHENRY Marian Football £ ense / • PLAINDEALER-PAGE 17-WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12. 1979 The overall strength of the Marian Central Catholic high school's varsity football team will be their defense, according to head coach, Lew Miskowicz. • "We have more people coming back on defense," Miskowicz said. "Our offense is untested, but our defense should be good." The Hurricanes are counting on returning lettermen like senior Bob Sleconich, of Woodstock. Sleconich, at 6' 1" is one of the Hurricanes' starting tight end and defensive back. Last year's starting quarterback, Tom Balchunas, from McHenry, is out for the season with a broken leg, according to Miskowicz. Tim Sherwood, a junior from Crystal Lake, is scheduled to replace Balchunas at the helm. Backfield returning lettermen like Marty Krenger, from Woodstock and John Mayer, from Crystal Lake are expected to "do great things" for the Hurricane offense. "An excellent doubles team will be senior Debbie Huemann, from Crystal Lake; and Gina Gilpin, from McHenry," Muldawney said. "Debbie has the poise and the experience and Gina has the aggressive, raw talent." * Muldawney said the team of Huemann and Gilpin could take the conference if they "stay tough all year." In the singles department, Muldawney is counting on a trio of veterans: Karen Truckenbrod and Ellen Miller, both from B^Henry, and Collette Neulle, from Bull Valley. Muldawney said there were a lot of new, young kids trying out for the team, like Kathy Doherty, from McHenry, who "never gives up on a point." Also mentioned as up-and-coming on the Hurricanes' tennis team are Heidi Reinsberger, Kathy Sharp and Susan Bolger, all of McHenry. ^ "As far as the year goes, we'll finish toward the top of the conference-well above the .500 mark," Muldawney said.
