Critical winter driving is to see and be seen factor on road Crucial decisions like when to stop for a light and whether or not to pass a car depend on a driver's ability to see clearly and make critical Split-second judgments. In fact, according to the American Optometric Associa tion, 90 percent of the driving decisions you make behind the wheel are based on vision. Some safety-conscious driv ers tend to concentrate only on good tires and reliable brakes. They often overlook the most obvious and vital key to safety--visibility. There are several simple steps you can take to insure your sight and safety--your ability to see and to he seen. Take care of windshield First, take care of your windshield --it's responsible for everything you see while driving. Winter rain, snow, dirt, and road grime on the windshield can interfere to a dangerous level with the sharpness of driver vision and judgments, according to Dr. Robert C. Sneller, former chairman of die American Optometric Associa tion's committee on motorists' vision and highway safety. To prevent obstruction, windshields should be cleaned, both inside and out, and car owners should check to make sure that wipers, washers, and defrosters are functioning prop erty. Wipers shouldn't smear, streak, chatter or skip during wiper-to-glass action. Wiper blades of natural rubber have a life expectancy of about six months, and they should be Ttre$tone WE MOVED TO 1301 N. FRONT ST. !! Install snowblades For winter driving, it's a good idea to install snowblades, which are espe cially designed to stand up to winter's rugged conditions. According to William H. Har bison, director of research and development at ANCO, the blades consist of a rubber "boot" over the blade struc ture. Mr. Harbison states, "Snowblades increase winter visibility because they reduce ice and snow buildup and allow the blades to function effi ciently." Washer pumps supply the fluid that lets wiper blades clean a dry windshield no mat ter what time of year it is. Many people would like to forget the blizzards that piled up waist-high snow drifts in their driveways and buried all but die tops of parking meters. In many areas earth movers and even the National Guard were called into action. It seemed as if spring would never come. Spring finally came; summer too; and car owners are now facing the inevitable again-- winter. But the Automotive In formation Council says you won't have to face winter car break-downs if you start win terizing now. Test your battery's charge level. Check the interior water level of die cells, and inspect and clean the battery connec tions and cables . Drain and flush the radiator and .refill with antifreeze. Have its'potency checked. Examine hoses, clamps and fan belts for wear. Check snow tires for wear before mounting. Buy new ones if necessary. Maintain the recommended air pressure and check it often. Underinflated , tires get less of a grip on slip pery surfaces and also cause accelerated wear. Test and adjust brakes before faulty ones give you trouble on slippery roads. Check brake fluid, adding more if necessary. Have an engine tune-up and oil change if it is time. Hold the air filter up to die light and re place it if it's clogged. C h e c k a n a r e p l a c e windshield wipers if they are not clearing windows properly. Fill the windshield-washer res ervoirs with an anti-freeze solu tion, Spray a shot of diy lubricant onto the door latches and around the rubber casings to keep them from freezing up. Check the front-end align ment by observing how the car holds its direction. Poor align ment can cause steering diffi culty on slippery roads, as well as premature tire wear. _ Check lights, defroster and heater to see if they are working property. Examine the exhaust system and muffler for possible carbon monoxide leaks. Finally,, the Automotive In formation Council recommends you put a scraper in die gtove box and emergency equipment in the hunk of your car. You might consider a shovel, emergency flares and a bucket of sand, salt or an old rug to use for traction in case you get stuck: f Give your 2*tfoor, 4-door, station wagon or compact auto that special touch of class with the XLR100 Running Board by Ow< Classic.
