PAGE 18 • PLA1NDE ALER - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12,1»79 DARKER ALUMINUM SIDING COLORS New tones of brown, red, green, blue and die earth tones, matching or oontraating trim, textures, and new panel styles offer a variety of choices for remodeling with low maintet aluminum Hiding. •"' -- ' ' --r Colorful and textured • . • If you're thinking about exte rior remodeling, you can have all the carefree advantages of a modern re-siding material and preserve the fine original details of your home at the same time. Or. you can completely change its appearance. Prefinished aluminum sid ing, long the favored choice for resurfacing homes because it eliminates the need for frequent expensive repainting, now comes in colors, textures, trim and detailing that authentically reproduce any architectural style from Victorian to Colonial to contemporary. Color choices Although white and pastels still are the most popular colors, pre-finished aluminum panels in darker shades of brown, green, blue and the earth tones are gaining in popularity. Many are reproductions of old Colo nial colors. " Combinations of colors are also attractive. Especially in vogue is the two-tone effect created by ivory siding and brown trim, or the reverse color combination. Many other colors can also be contrasted successfully, but decorators suggest you limit your choice to three and keep them complementary. Prefera bly, they should blend well with other houses in the neighbor hood. Textures vary ... The choice of textures in sid ing has also expanded. These textures are formed into the sid ing and range from smooth sur faces to replicas of almost any style wood finish, including ce dar shakes. Original surfaces can be du plicated so faithfully that when skillfully applied, it is difficult to distinguish aluminum from wood at a distance. Panel styles Panel styles vary too. For contemporary homes an eight- inch wide horizontal panel that resembles wood lap siding is currently popular. However, for a colonial style home, you may prefer a double- four-inch panel which is actu ally an eight-inch panel formed to resemble two four-inch ones. Usually, pre-finished alumi num panels are installed hor izontally to accentuate the long, low lines of a house, but vertical panels are also available to min imize an overlong horizontal sweep. On a colonial home, for in stance, vertical panels can cre ate an effective accent for the tional vertical siding looks like board and batten or V-groove siding and is twelve inches wide. Detailing reproduced Aluminum siding manufac turers have also been able to re produce the fine detailing of older architectural periods to give the new surface a com pletely authentic appearance. On such a house, a good in staller can duplicate prized details by custom bending alu- minum (coil stock) to cover de caying wood. Even the gingerbread on a Victorian style house can be re- finished to blend with the new siding and look appropriate. Homeowners who favor vinyl must choose the supplier carefully since the type of plas tic used varies from manufac turer to manufacturer. The installer must also be chosen with care since vinyl ex pands in hot weather much more than alutninum and can look wavy. One of the most recent devel opments in aluminum manufac turing techniques is a delicately grooved and beaded edge which was a feature of siding used in colonial times. It exactly duplicates the eight-inch wood siding design originally formed by hand molding planes, yet retains all ARE OUR See McHenry's Trailer Specialists For All Types Of Trailers And Trailer Accessories... Replace trim Such detailing, along with other techniques in handling aluminum trim, can be applied even if you don't re-side your house. Replacing soffits, fascia, gut ters, downspouts, corner-posts or columns with aluminum Witt also update its appearanc^ and redUCe maintenance. Although pre-finished siding is also available in vinyl plastic, hardboard and steel, aluminum continues to be the most suc cessful, with over 11,000,000 homes resurfaced with this ma terial in the last 32 years. Its paint finish is usually war ranted for 20 years and more in ' any climate and, according to recent reports from contractors, homes it-sided with aluminum over three decades ago are still in good condition. Despite the availability of a wide range of colors and tex tured, pre-finished hardboard requires mort care than other sidings; weather can affect the exposed edges of pre-finished steel siding; and vinyl plastic, still available only in white and a limited number of pastel colors, may become brittle at . low temperatures and wavy as temperatures rise. While you are considering the aesthetics and durability of new siding, also give some thought to adding insulation be tween die original and the new surface. Plain siding of any kind over uninsulated walls has no effec tive insulating value but, when properly installed with insulat ing board and aluminum foil, the insulated siding can reduce fuel consumption and add to your comfort in winter and summer. Install any time Because it is easy to handle ... and does not become brittle in cold temperatures, aluminum / siding and trim can be applied any time of the year. Most contractors determine price by the number of "sauares" (100 square feet of wall area) of your home, plus custom trim and accessories. Select your contractor as carefully as you choose the re siding material because his craftsmanship will help deter mine the quality of the finished house. Check with neighbors who have had their homes re-sided, ask to see houses the contractor has completed, and consult your local banks and Better Business Bureau.
