When their preliminary re- - modeling plans weie complete, the Kess's consulted architect Philip Smerling, who handled the design and decor. He enlarged the countertop in the kitchen to act as an eating counter. The architect achieved dra­ matic results by removing a series of windows along the liv­ ing room wall and a small glid­ ing door linking the kitchen with a deck at the rear of the house. In their place, Smerling spe­ cified two 12 foot-wide, Ander­ sen wood gliding doors, flanked at each end by matching side lights.
