G > County business and in dustry are demonstrating more support for the United Way of McHenry County this year than in previous years as many are contributing more than before cuid new firms are being heard from. The handling of money is the focus of attention this month as the United Way of McHenry County announced plans for a one day seminar which will offer information on board responsbility and technical assistance to not- for-profit agencies in a four- county area. The seminar, which will be held Nov. 17 at Waubonsee Community college, will be co-sponsored by five area United Ways including Elgin, Aurora, McHenry County, DeKalb and suburban Chicago. Other co- sponsors of the seminar include the Berstad Foun dation, Peat, Marwick and Mitchell, and Waubonsee Community college. Dr. Forrest Etheredge, president of Waubonsee and president of the United Way of the. Aurora area, will serve as host of the seminar. The workshop will be patterned on a conference entitled, "Focus On Finances," which was of fered recently in Chicago by the management consulting firm of Peat, Marwick and Mitchell. The workshop will be directed Jt>y agency board presidents and executive directors. Invitations have been sent to approximately 1,000 human care agencies in the four-county region of McHenry, Kane, DeKalb and DuPage. Tickets for the conference will be sent to the first 350 persons who respond. Funding for the program will be provided by the Berstad foundation, a private foundation which makes -grants available to tax-exempt organizations^ which operate charitable, religious, Scientific or ' educational activities to benefit persons living in the four-county area. The purpose of the meeting is to identify the technical needs of charitable a g e n c i e s t h r o u g h ' cooperative programs and efforts. Topics for the day will include "Today's Board of Trustees' It's Role and Responsibility", "Technical Assistance Resources", 4 ' T r u s t e e s L e g a l L i a b i l i t i e s , " ' ' U n derstanding and Using Financial Statements", and "The Budgeting Process". Following this orientation meeting, representatives of agencies will be able to apply to the Berstad foun dation for funding of technical assistance in the areas of board developnubt, personnel management, capitol budget planning, e v a l u a t i o n s y s t e m s , bookkeeping, audit and legal services, long-range plan ning, data processing and other areas where it feels the need. * "The joint sponsorship represents the first time United Ways and foun dations have collaborated in this area of endeavor," according to John O'Hagan, president of the McHenry County United Way.
