SCTION 2 PAGEJ of FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies November 7, 1929) The members of Court Joyce Kilmer, Catholic Daughters of America, held annual installation of of ficers |t the K. C. hall. Vera Purvey was installed as grand regent. Following the installation ceremonies (the officers and members went to the McHenry House, where a delicious 6 o'clock banquet was enjoyed. About fifty - enjoyed the dinner, after which community singing was led by the court's songstress, Miss Dorothy Knox. Miss Knox, who is a talented musician, composed several of the songs for the occasion. Saturday night was the date of the annual Halloween party at the Community high school, which was given by the members of the sophomore class. The hall was attractively decorated for the occasion and games were played. As usual, the freshmen were initiated at this party and the remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from, the files of November 16, 1939) The past week saw a change in business owner ship in the community when the Earl R. Walsh insurance office in this city purchased the agencyof F.A. Hitchens in Ringwood. Mr. Hitchens, who holds the position of depot agent for the Nor thwestern ' Railroad, has been a licensed insurance agent in the community for the past twenty-four years. Taking an active part in the development of Wonder lake and enjoying a large clientele it*;that section, he soon found his duties too numerous^;to handle as he desired. Almost completed, a garage, the masterpiece of the boys taking the vocational Building Trades course at the high school, stands in all its glorious white paint job behind the high school. It is a beauty to behold, considering that the building was constructed entirely by boys of high school age.r.Under the- guidance 5f 'Elmer Baum, who has had many years of valuable experience in this work, the boys are gaining a knowledge of a practical science which will be of use to them in whatever trade or profession they may follow. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November'ft!, 1954) The cottiity treasurer's office annbilhced last week the largest collection of taxes eveF recorded in McHenry Cotinty. Collections came from the largest bill ever presented to taxpayers, $4,932,276.94, and amounted to $4,792,367.04. This amounts to 97.4 percent of the entire bill and is believed to be the largest percentage ever collected. Of the county's personal property tax bill of $937,858.81, $788,630.30 has been collected. According to Mr. Stevens, all of the unpaid taxes are not delinquent as some have been sold at a - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7,1979 turnace blew out during a feather party held at the Moose lodge. Algonquin paid $883,127.45 and Dorr was third with $612,067:09. There was considerable excitement, a period of mild fear and general em barrassment when -the TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 12, 1969) One of the most important meetings of the year for the Wonder Lake Kiwanis club occurred this past week, which marked the selection of a "man of the year" and installation of hew officers. President Ward Ehredt presented John Doherty the club's "Man of the Ye^r" award. FJe was selected for the honor, for his outstanding work with children in the Wonder Lake area. Five directors were elected to the Chamber of Commerce. They were Bob Steiner, Bill Nye, George Thompson, Mel Prust and Dan Robson. McHenry veterans of two World Wars and two more recent conflicts marched in commemoration of the first Armistice day fifty^-one years ago. They heard speeches and songs ap propriate to the occasion and many of them doubtless offered prayers for the departed buddies they still* hold in fond memory. For the veterans of World War I, most prominent in carrying out plans for the 1969 event, the celebration was marked by deeper memories than the others. This was natural, for more than a half century has passed since that all- important Armistice was signed to mark the end of World War I. Give a thought - if you were unable to give your family a Thanksgiving dinner - and help us to ac complish this good workV, God bless you. VANDALISM Due to recent vandalism, the following thoughts come to mind. The first thought could be "why." In a town as # we have, where practically all the families own their ' own homes, should such a problem exist? Our homes are well taken care of ; truly we would not like to have anyone deface or damage them in any way. Our children, likewise, are trained to respect and love their homes, trees, gardens, flowers and the fruits of these that help feed the family. It is difficult to find an answer to such a question, and the reasons, no doubt, are many ; but they still do not give understandable answers. It would take more than a judge's decision to put a finger on the real cause j £ So, let each of us do our little bit to avoid such cir- cumstances, by good example, and saying a prayer that God will protect our children, people and town! - DATES TO REMEMBER Nov. 9-10 - St. John's Parish Retreat. QOBQOOOOOOOO Safety Hiqts fflffftPOfKWftPOf By Alan J. Dixon Secretary of State Fog is a favorite trick of nature during autumn in Illinois. Avoid driving in fog whenever possible. If you must drive; however, here are some things you cap do to reduce the inherent danger of accidents in fpg. 1. Reduce your normal driving speed. 2. When you see headlights or red taillights, reduce your speed still more. The headlights may be on a vehicle which is being driven down the center of the roadway, and the taillights may be those of a vehicle just barely moving or stopped completely on the road. 3. Be prepared for an emergency stop, and stay within the limits of your vision. If you simply cannot see due to dense fog, cautiously pull well off the roadway and stop. 4. Remember, you will see more clearly with dimmed headlights. 5. Caution your passengers to be alert for lights or other obstructions ahead on the road. Extra caution is always advised in inclement weather, and a double portion of care for fog is strongly recommended. (A copy of the newly revised Rules of the Road booklet will be sent to you upon request. Write Alan J. Dixon, Secrrtary of State, Springfield, 111., 62756.) Reg. 5.76.
