STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD SPORTS ARL WALSH*" So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR- It may have been our last climb up a ladder as we were hoisted into the press coop at McCracken Field Friday night. Right from the horses mouth comes word that a modern press box will be constructed before another football season rolls around. There's good news tonight! How nice it is to report a 34-6 Warrior victory over Crown High. In victory, it would be easy to go all the way through the squad to name individual performances. From our point of view, Dave D'Angelo toted the football better than he has at any time this season. He isn't big. But, he's mighty. Tom Jablonski again was a tower of strength in the line. Jim Wilson's play took our fancy. The Sabatka to Klapperich pass com bination was great. Doessel was strong in ground yar dage. Barry Anderson, who knows what is going on in the game at all times, played another fine game for the Warriors. Dan Freund, a big fellow at center, and his mates proved once more that the center of McHenry's line is tough territory. When the score was safe, Coach Schlender and his assistants' Ed Partenheimer and Brian Wilson, sent everybody into the game So, you see. it is hard to name all the boys. One thing that took the crowd's fancy was the sight of Mike Fresen kicking points after touchdowns. McHenry fans haven't been treated to that kind of kicking of late. Mike is an exchange student from Africa, living with the Dan Kinnerks. We wondered where Mike had been all season and asked the old question if the coaches had been saving him for the Junior Prom. Athletic Director Bill Blankenhom told me that Mike didn't come to the team as a great kicker, but per sistent practice brought astounding results. Popular Jean Natoli, cheerleader Sponsor, again invaded the press box. Mentioned to her that she probably wanted the Warriors to win 100 to 0. "One hundred and ten", was her quick response. In this last game of the season, the high school band, Pom Pon girls and cheerleaders put on a great show. Band formations were really good. And -- something new has been added. Joe Dehn did a bang-up job as announcer for the new Cable TV. McHenry is going Big Time. It was good to see Bill Day, former coach, happy as anybody about the Warriors closing out the season with an impressive victory. Our congratulations to the coaching staff. They didn't give us a winning season, but did give us thoughts that better days are around the corner. For one cheery thought, it looks like Dan Boland, sophomore coach, has some boys ready to step in and do a good job for the varsity next year. Now for basketball. Dick Rabbitt will be giving you a preview one of these days. If any of you didn't catch on, he stuck his neck out in picking teams to beat both the Warriors and Johnsburg Skyhawks. He fired the boys up for great efforts. It seemed to work. The man seemed more amused than abused as he told of "a kid hardly dry behind the ears who probably got his first driver license the day before". The man has more than 50 years of driving a car with an enviable record. Said he made a proper move into a "left turn only" lane as the kid passed him on the right and cracked, "Why don't you learn to drive?" As I drove toward a restaurant, a bumper sticker ahead read "Drink Milk For Health". So I ordered a glass of milk. Can you believe? It cost 80 cents. My health took a set-back. Had a nice visit with Mrs. Percy Lodtz of Crystal Lake. Being lonely since Percy was taken from this earth, she recalled the many times they walked the streets of McHenry (Percy's home town). As lime went on, the visits were different. McHenry expanded and they didn't know too many people along the way. Another Crystal Laker, Florence . Knox, will celebrate her 84th birthday on Armistice Day. Florence grew up in the Terra Cotta area and was a highly respected school teacher in Crystal Lake for many years. I .think her heart was partially in McHenry. She is a long time Plaindealer reader. H a p p y B i r t h d a y , Florence. State, Zip. _ -- - By Dick Rabbitt Coach Joe Schlender's McHenry High Warriors closed out the season in fine style Friday night, by defeating Crown 34 to 6. The Warriors came to play, and play they did, as they ran and passed their way up and down the field all night. It was a case of putting it all together, and the win made up for a lot of close losses during the season. Barry Anderson brought the crowd to its feet on the opening kickoff, when he returned the kick 58 yds. to the Viking 32. He was just a block away from breaking it loose on the play. The Warriors marched to the 12 before the Vikings held and took over the ball. With Ledford and Cullen carrying the ball the Vikings marched to the Warrior 46 where Terry Packard recovered the first of his two fumbles. Two Sabatka's passes to Tim Klapperich ' gave the Warriors a-first down on the -Crown 29. After failing to make a first down, on the first play a Warrior picked off a Crown pass and was downed on the Crown 11. Dave D'Angelo then skirted right end for the T.D. Mike (Super Toe) Fressen then added the point and the Warriors led 7 to 0 at 2:03 of the period. After the kickoff the Warriors held and D'Angelo returned the punt to the Viking 39. Two plays later Jim Doessel ran to the 22. D'Angelo made 6 to the 16, and then Tim Sabatka found Klapperich all alone in the end zone for the TD. Super Toe again kicked the point and the Warriors led 14 to 0 at 10:21 of the second period. Sabatka to Klapperich Clicks On the kickoff, Ledford returned to the Vike 27. Three plays later the Vikes were again forced to punt to the Warrior 28. On the first play Sabatka found Klap perich open over the middle, and the junior end outran the Crown defenders for 72 yds. and another T.D. A pass for the PAT failed and the Warriors led 20 to 0. After the kickoff the Warrior defense again held and Anderson picked off a third down pass on the Warrior 45. A Sabatka pass was intercepted on the 25. The alert Anderson then picked off his second in terception of the game, but time ran out on the Warriors and they led 20 .to 0 at half- time. It was a joyous group of Warrior fans who gathered at the coitcession stand during the intermission. Mike Sabatka was all smiles on the performance of son Tim. Joe D'Angelo was beaming on Dave's touch down run, and while this was going on their wives were busy working in the stand. No need to say everyone was happy at this time. Anderson Intercepts Again After the ensusing kickoff, Mr. Anderson picked off his third interception of the night. A Crown penalty put the ball on the Viking 39. Doessel, Jim Wilson, and D'Angelo running through the line gave the Warriors a first down on the 27. Sabatka found his favorite receiver, Klapperich, open and gave the Warriors a first down on the 8. Jim Doessel then ran untouched in the end 'zone, and Super Toe again made the kick good and the Warriors led 27 to 0. After Crown got the kickoff they fumbled and Doessel recovered on the 30. After failing to make a first down, the Crown Vikings again coughed up the foot ball, and this time Terry Packard came up with the ball on the 20. D'Angelo raced to the 5. Wilson picked up 1 on the 4, and then Tim Sabatka ran in for the T.D. Super Toe Fressen again split the uprights and the Warriors led 34 to 0 as the third period came to a close. In the final period, Coach Schlender gave his regulars the rest of the night off, and the reserves filled in doing a good job. With 39 seconds on the clock, Grant, the sophomore quarterback passed 34 yds. to end Gary Seymour for Crown's only score of the night and the Warriors walked off the field with a convincing 34 to 6 victory. Heroes Galore The Warriors had many heroes "Friday night. The excellent play of defensive back Barry Anderson with 3 interceptions, and his of fensive play as a wing back. The running of Dave D'Angelo, Jim Wilson and Jim Doessel, and the of fensive line who opened the holes for these backs, Dan Freund, Jeff Rhode, Andy WAS YOUR PICTURE IN THE PAPER?
