• V - ' ^ HELPING PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 20S • Crystal lake/Illinois 60014 • (815) 459-2641 By Kathleen Thayer Another sad story needs to be told. A very angry lady called the office last week to ask if there was something HP could do to, catch and prosecute the despicable people who dumped three German Shepherd mix puppies, about two months old, in front of her house. They, and their neighbors were able to pinpoint the dumping time between 5:15 and 5:20 p.m. on the night of Oct. 29, at Route 14 arid Doty road in front of the Mayfair between Crystal Lake and Woodstock. She wanted the offenders to know that the three helpless pups wandered into the road where they were immediately killed, and one pup was terribly mqtilated. HP offers a reward for in formation leading to the apprehension of these people. An act like this is against the'law and therefore, an offense > that can be prosecuted. If anyone knows of someone who suddenly was able to dispose of 3 pups, please call HP, your identity will not be publicized. HP can, through investigation, track these people down and establish ownership., however the public's help is needed. What is hard to understand is, Animal Control is not so very far away, so why take this alternative? If they have to die, why couldn't it be painlessly and at least after given a chance for adoption through the Animal Control Center. No one involved in this work can understand the kind of thinking that brings about such needless tragedy. Perhaps those kinds of people are akin to the ones who callously dump a new born baby in a garbage can when there are so many couples wanting a baby. Is it any wonder sometimes, why people turn away from other HP There is still hope, however, that one day man . will come of age and become the civilized creature he was put on this earth to be. It won't happen soon, "but as long as ther$ are and who print the column, there is hope. This is the season for ' Thanksgiving. It is the time to- count our blessings. Helping Paws has been blessed by the kindness and generosity shown by so many supporters. HP hopes to continue to help the county pets as long as the money holds out. The ^problem is not over concerning HP's future. The big financial support we hoped for, has not come through. The contributions made in the collection cans throughout the county, art what is keeping HP alive. The reality of the situation still remains that HP is news now; people are concerned, but soon the cans will not bear the fruit as they are doing now. In fact, after the holidays - HP will most likely have to take the cans out of the stores and businesses, and HP will soon become yesterday's problem, yesterday's news. When that happens, once again, HP will find themselves in the situation of saying "now what can be done?" Helping Paws members of the board of directors know that salvation can come from some sort of large single financial support. HP know that somewhere in McHenry county, some animal lover who needs a tax shelter (in the form of an old building and land to give HP on contract) is simply not aware of the need. HP have a few gimmicks in the works to try and reach them. HP will keep readers in formed concerning the future. There are people with widely varied interests and skills enrolled in the in dividualized Applied Music classes at McHenry County college. The 30 students studying voice and instruments in the classes this fall range from adults who have always wanted to learn to play the piano to advanced music students taking the class to pursue a career in music. The students study piano, classical guitar, pipe organ and voice with part time MCC instructors as well as with Music Instructor Judy Williamson. • They work on a one-to-one basis with the instructors and meet for half an hour each week for 16 weeks each semester. The course attracts high school students and senior citizens, Ms. Williamson said, as well as all ages in between. MCC can also make arrangements for students who are interested in studying trumpet, French horn, violin, oboe, . saxaphone or jazz piano, Williamson said. For additional information on the Applied Music program telephone MCC. "Wit consists in knowing the resemblance of things that differ and the difference of things that are alike."
