Remembering When... (with long time subscribers) \ HELEN MILLER AND MARY HARVEY "I can remember when the first fairway of the McHenry Country club and the parking lot at East campus used to be a gravel pit," Mary Harvey said. As Ms. Harvey looked back to the days when she lived in McHenry, she noticed and reminisced about the long-term changes in the community. ' 'When I was in school, the only school in town was Landmark school. The little children were so impressed with having the bigger children in the same building. Later, Ms. Harvey would come bade as a teacher in McHenry's first new school - Edgebrook. - Ms. Harvey considers the growth of the City a natural course of events. She was in Hawaii before it was a state and she has seen it grow into a "high- rise" state. Likewise, she has seen the citrus orchards around San Francisco give way to development The Plaindealer has been a part of her life for 22 years. Musin and Meanderin is one of her favorite columns and she likes to keep tabs on the community reaction to tearing down old schools and taking away old bridges. Even now, while Ms. Harvey lives in California, the Plaindealer helps her watch her home town. For Mary's sister, Helen, a lifetime resident of McHenry, the Plaindealer has been in the family for 40 years. PAGE 3 • PLAINDEALER • FRIDAY.
