It is held at the McHenry Market Place Shopping center parking lot each month, except December, when it is held in the West campus high school parking lot. This month, members of McHenry's Square dance group, the Checkerboard Squares, will be working along with the McHenry County Defenders on the day of the drive to make sure materials. are properly prepared for the next step toward being recycled. - A monthly recycling drive has been held on the third Saturday of every month in .the town of McHenry since February of 1973. Since that time approximately 3'^ million pounds of newspaper, cardboard and Iii.agazlnes > Dave been brought to the McHenry Market Place shopping center by citizens concerned enough about the en vironment to take the few extra minutes a week that is required to bundle newspapers rather than discard them with the trash.' More than 160 tons of glass and cans have also been recycled, in addition to ap proximately two tons of aluminum and 400 gallons of used motor oil. All of these materials have been kept out of the solid waste stream and have .entered &gain into the flow of natural resources available to the state. An interesting fact to note is that for every ton of newspaper's recycled, 17 pulp trees are saved for later use. In addition, community groups have an opportunity to earn funds with which to carry on their projects, and precious landfill space is being saved. Anyone having questions regarding recycling, or with a large quantity of properly prepared material that needs to be picked up, please call the McHenry County D e f e n d e r s ' r e c y c l i n g representative at 385-8512, or they may call Karen or Don Bunnel of the Checkerboard Squares. Chicago' Oktoberfest Opens Nov. 16 'Hi The Chicago Oktoberfest will transform Navy Pier into the world's biggest international party for three days of singing, yodeling, dancing, fun and games from Nov. 16 through 18 - a great way to get a jump on the holdiay spirit. The festival has Bavarian roots but its entertainment is a United Nations of talent. "It highlights the multiple national cultures which have helped make Chicago and the united States great," according to Stephen A. Rapaport, president of the sponsoring National Theater of the Performing Arts. • McHENRY HEARING AID SERVICE CENTER Every Wednesday 10 to 5 p.m. SENIOR CITIZEN DISCOUNT CENTER BATTERIES - 50% DISCOUNT Hearing Tests - Repairs & Sales All Makes - All in the Eor\Models 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE I Robert Stensland & Associates 3937 W.
