RTE. 120, McHENRY. ILL. Weather forecasters may argue about how much snow there's going to be this winter, but one thing is certain. Winter is coming. And when you're getting your home ready for the cold weather, it's a good idea to think in terms of fire safety, according to August W. Hock, general manager of The Illinois FAIR Plan association. Hock, who heads the not- for-profit organization made up of all property insurance firms in the state, suggests that common sense and a few simple rules can help avoid tragic fires. "Many home fires are caused by carelessness and lack of planning," Hock said, "and fires in winter are particularly devastating because of the additional misery brought on by the cold." Hock offers these ten rules i /- to protect your family and your property from home fires: 1. Have your furnace checked by a professional every year before cold weather hits. Be sure to call a reputable dealer. 2. If you're buying a space heater, check to see that it has the Underwriters Laboratory, Inc. seal. This means the unit has been tested for all reasonably foreseeable hazards. 3. Keep combustibles away from the furance or space heater. 4. Make sure the area around the furnace and the heater are cleaned regularly. Accumulated dust can cause flash fires. 5. Put an asbestos or tin mat underneath the space heater if it sits on a dry floor. 6. Don't let children leave their toys near the furnace or the heater. 7. Don't use the kitchen stove as a source of heat. The gas cuts down on your oxygen supply. 8. Install smoke and heat detectors, and establish emergency procedures for quick family evacuation in the event of fire. 9. Post the fire department emergency number clearly near the telephone. Instruct the children on procedures for reporting fires. 10. Finally, use" good common sense in all your housekeeping. Don't allow trash to accumulate. Don't overload your outlets. Check and replace defective cords and wiring. • • * • T h e r e ' s n o w a y t o economize without doing without something. * * * * Oats and You Oats are highest in protein of all cereals.
