Johnsburg Skyhawks Win Holiday Tourney By Randy Swikle Three games into the season, the Johnsburg Skyhawk cage club is already a "championship" team. The Skyhawks har vested the first place trophy in Round Lake's annual Thanksgiving tournament by coasting past the host school 57-47, edging Fenton 45-42 in a fine come-from- behind effort, and defeating Wauconda 62-57 for the title. An enthusiastic Johnsburg cheering section was delighted to see the Skyhawk basketball machine out of the moth balls and cranking again. It's a machine that still needs plenty of polish and lubrication, particularly along the "coordinating" gears and "passing" mechanism. But, never theless, the engine's ignited and building momentum. Johnsburg's 6'4" center Tom Schoenig was one of the heroes of the championship- deciding game against Wauconda. He hit seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter to help the Skyhawks maintain a narrow lead, and the big man under the basket also netted six field goals and three more free throws to earn him the leading scorer position with 22 points. Schoenig was Johnsburg's top scorer in the tournament with 56 points, almost matching his 57 percent field goal accuracy. With a first quarter lead of 20-12, it looked as though Johnsburg was on its way to an easy victory in the final game. But a "fired-up" Wauconda squad took ad vantage of several John sburg turnovers (bad passes and traveling-violations) to outscore the Skyhawks in the second quarter 20-10 and narrow the Johnsburg lead to 32-30 at halftime. Skyhawk Chris Dixon opened the scoring in the third quarter with a precision drive to the basket. After Schoenig connected on a free throw, the Skyhawks committed two bad passes and another traveling violation and gave Wauconda the opportunity to narrow the score to 37-36. Schoenig scored again, but any effort for the Skyhawks to regain momentum was th warted when a technical foul was called against John sburg's sharp-shooting guard Brett Zimbrick. Wauconda scored the free throw, took possession of the ball, and netted another field goal. Another Johnsburg pass was intercepted, and Wauconda scored again to grab hold of the lead for the first time 41-39 with 1:31 remaining in the third quarter. A 15-footer by Zimbrick and another layup by Schoenig returned the lead to the Skyhawks as the contest entered the final period. Johnsburg maintained a slim lead through most of the fourth quarter. It wasn't until <2:36 showed on the clock that the Skyhawks began to widen a two-point edge to a more comfortable margin. Wauconda's Brommelkamp, who was high point for the Bulldogs; with 19, fouled out and Schoenig made both free throws to give the Johnsburg team a 57-53 lead. The Skyhawks played cautious ball during the time remaining and posted a 62-57 victory. Zimbrick was second leading scorer for the Skyhawks with 20 points, and Dixon was third with 9 points. Johnsburg's 57-47 victory over Round Lake in the first game of the tourney saw another outstanding per formance by Schoenig and some superb ball-handling and scoring by senior guard Rick Szumlas. Schoenig tallied 23 points, missing only four field goals. He commanded the boards over a much smaller Round Lake club. Over, Around, and Through Szumlas maneuvered the ball over, around, and through the Round Lake defense to net 17 points in a fine exhibition of teamwork, good defense and ball con trol. Two other Skyhawk scoring aces, Zimbrick and Dixon, were held to 6 and 2 points respectively, but each player earned six assists for the evening. Big Frank Jakeubicek scored 5 points for Johnsburg. It was Fenton in game number two of the tour nament that gave the Skyhawks the most trouble. The Johnsburg offense just couldn't find the mark in the first half. With Schoenig hitting less than 50 percent from the free throw line, Dixon going scoreless, and Zimbrick hitting a dismal three for ten field goals attempted, the Johnsburg team could only muster up 15 points to Fenton's 25 as the contest paused for halftime intermission. In the third quarter Zimbrick found the mark, netting four of five field goals. Dixon's two baskets and Schoenig's one helped the Skyhawks narrow Fenton's lead. The John sburg defensive effort held Fenton to eight points in the third period.; *r Free throws (10 for 12) put the Skyhawks in the victory circle in the fourth quarter. Reserve guard Rick Neiss . hit four for four at the extra point line, and Dixon,. Schoenig and Zimbrick each sank two apiece. Forward Kurt Valentin scored his second field goal of the night, and Zimbrick, who was high point man with 20, netted two baskets in the fourth quarter. The final score of the Johnsburg victory over Fenton was 45-42. The Skyhawks receive their first test of the season in the Shark Conference as they travel to Marengo Friday. The Skyhawks are the defending champions of the conference, and Marengo took second place last year. Last season the Skyhawks lost to Marengo on the road and won at home. The Wrestling Warriors got their season off to a super start by winning both matches in their double dual Saturday. In this first action of the wrestling season, McHenry hosted the Streamwood Sabers and the Round Lake Panthers in the West Campus gym. Team scores for the af ternoon found the Warriors whipping Round Lake 38 to 27 and topping Streamwood 29 to 17. Streamwood in turn beat Round Lake by a 39-27 score. Senior Bruce Brda (132) began his season with two Dins over his opponents. Pins were also scored by Juniors Brian Wrona (126), Scott Zimmermant. (112) and Vic Betancourt (138). Betan- court's fall was in a quick 59 seconds. A total of 20 points was piled up against his two opponents by senior Mark Betancourt, while allowing them only one point. Head coach Marty Sobc- zak, in addition to feeling pleased with the final team scores, commented that he was very happy with the positive attitude the wrestlers are showing. He also felt that one of the team's strong points in this double dual was in going hard for the takedown during the first periods. On the other side of the coin, the coach would like to see the Warriors work to break their opponent's control and go for the escape. The combined efforts of Bill B l a n k e n h o r n , G r e g LaPlante and John Mergl, a district-purchased winch is now raising and lowering the wrestling mats between the upper and lower gyms. Previously the 800 to 1,000 pound roUed-up mats were hauled back up the stairs after a match by exhausted wrestlers. It was a pleasure to view this new safety feature in action. The next Varsity wrestling match will be another non- conference double dual this Saturday at Woodstock. McHenry's opponents will be Rockford Jefferson and Harvard. Mat action begins at 1:30.
