Seek Walrus 'Parents' PLAN CHILDREN'S PROGRAM-A rehearsal for the annual children's Christmas program will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, 404 North Green street, McHenry, Sunday, Dec. 9, from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. The program frill be presented to the congregation, parents and friends at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1C. The theme for this year's program is "Gifts of Love" and the program will involve presentations of Christmas musk, hymn singing, scripture reading, and children bringing gifts for distribution to needy children. Coordinating this year's program are Marjorie Wahler and Ann Davis. Pictured are a group of sixth grade students speaking with their teacher, Erv Staveteig, about the program. ? State Fair In Trouble Keepers at Brookfield Zoo ai$ looking for walrus "parents" these days. Seems Olga walrus, star mermaid of Seven Seas Panorama, is in something of a funk and looking more like Scrooge every day. Winter is hard on all, but especially so on this rare 19- year-old walrus. It's not the weather that bothers Olga - her ton of blubber can handle that well. It's the disap pearance of her admiring throngs, which thin markedly in the cooler weather. Amy the seal, Olga's pool mate, is just not a large enough court for the Queen of Seven Seas. yNot only that, but Olga is facing a Christmas without any adoptive Brookfield Zoo parents. Despite the fact that she is one of five of her kind in captivity in the country, and although (or perhaps because) she is the most expensive animal in the zoo to feed, this Brookfield Zoo star has not been adopted this year in the Brookfield Zoo Parents animal adoption program. The popular three- year-old program enables one to adopt an animal by underwriting all or part of its food costs for a year, in return for which there is a package of benefits. En thusiasm for the program has been high and many parents make special trips out to Brookfield to visit their adopted animals. Olga's keepers think this would be just the ticket for her, especially given the fact that she is now not only the zoo's most expensive animal to feed but also one of its most sociable. So, this year's Christmas Parents program has been planned around Major changes in at tendance, revenues and useage would be necessary -to make the Illinois State fair self-supporting, Comptroller | Roland W. Burris said this week. A special study of the State Fair agency in this month's fiscal report from the comptroller, released today, shows that annual revenues | from the fair have increased fonly $375,000 since 1972, |while attendance (since i 1969) has been cut almost in lhalf-| Comptroller Burris' brief but revealing analysis of the fiscal facts of the fair does not argue for or against the concept of a self-supporting fair, but underscores some of the problems in achieving a p a y - i t s - o w n - w a y exhibition. And the regular analysis of the state's fiscal health shows that while tax revenues are still rising, there are also signs that a recessionary cloud is still near. Here are some of the key findings of the State fair | study: I -Revenues of the State £ Fair agency in FY 1979 were only $375,000 higher than in I FY 1972. | -The Wisconsin State fair (self-supporting for 37 I years) is similar to the Illinois exhibition in many ways, but has far different policies and is located in a more populous area. -While the Wisconsin fair offers no free use of its grounds or facilities, the Illinois fairgrounds still provides free use of buildings and facilities to a number of state agencies and only this year began charging many non governmental groups for use of facilities. -Raw attendance figures show that State fair at tendance has been cut almost in half between 1969 and 1979 though the fair has been increased to 11 days since 1976. • -It is noted that under accounting concepts few state agencies are self- supporting, and while drastic concept changes might achieve a profit- producing fair, it appears unlikely in the near future unless far more fairgoers are attracted to the Illinois exhibition. Olga eats about 55 pounds of fish daily (60 pounds now in cold weather). This costs the zoo about $35 a day. Instead of waiting for someone to come up with a loose $13,000 to cover Olga's yearly food bill, the zoo has set up an Olga fund for Christmas. Through this, Olga Parents can adopt the walrus for $15, and receive a package of standard Parent benefits (iron-on T-shirt decal, window decal, name plaque, adoption certificate) plus some special ones for Olga Parents (illustration of the walrus and invitation to a special dolphin show and a "reception" with Olga in t-AUK »- PLAIN UK ALfcK - FRIDAY. DECEMBER 7, If19 January). Hopes are that visits from her parents will take the humbug out of Olga's holiday. The Olga Parent package, which bears a picture of Olga and an illustration of a big red bow, is ready to go under the Chrtmas tree. To adopt Olga, write Olga Parents, Brookfield Zoo, Bookfield, 111., 60513, or call the zoo at 242-2630. In order to get the Olga Parent package in time for Christmas, we have set a deadline of Dec. 17 for Olga adoption. You cm fix wicker furni ture with wire twists from bread or garbage bags.
