Twice Told Tales Host Families Fbr Exchange FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 12, 1929) r- The West McHenry State -bank recently distributed about $10,000 to members of their Christmas Savings clubs, which is a sure sign that old Saint Nick will arrive in McHenry with good cheer again this Christmas. The Peoples State bank of McHenry with Floyd Foss as cashier has united with the West McHenry State bank in opening up clubs for next year and it is predicted that next year a larger amount than ever before will be distributed to patrons of the banks. At a meeting of the McHenry County Real Estate board, held at Paul Gault's office in Marengo, Roy A. Kent of McHenry was reelected as president for the coming year. The realtors are in good spirits over the prospects for the real estate business in McHenry county in 1930. Much discussion was had and matters taken up such as scales of commission, realty practices, listings, etc. Mrs. Samantha Button is 99 years old today, Dec. 12, and is quite well for such an advanced age. She is one of the oldest residents of this vicinity, as w^ll as one of the pioneers of this country, coming here with her parents when a very small child. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 21, 1939) Miss Evelyn Anderson of this city and Arnold Dalgaard of Antioch were selected to appear over WLS, the Prairie Farmer station, following 3 three- day home talent show at Antioch given by the Antioch American Legion Post. Mr. Dalgaard will appear on WLS Dec. 30 and Miss An derson will appear on Jan. 6. Miss Anderson and Dalgaard bring to four the present total of performers selected to appear in Chicago broadcasts as a result of the Antioch show- Clem and Vince Adams of McHenry, "Twelve Feet of Harmony", were chosen to appear in a broadcast a few weeks ago. Playing three games in a four night stretch, our high *• school team shows the following results since last we went to press. Our team ran into a steamroller when they met the Delavan deaf and mute boys who showed uncanny skill in beating our team two to one. To be more accurate, the score was 72 to 36. They were defeated by St. Mary's also, 26 to 24. In the third game McHenry nosed out Richmond 27 to 25. them to enter the country, fifteen were held in county jail awaiting representatives of the U.S. Immigration Service. One of them was admitted to McHenry hospital for treatment. A pretty and popular McHenry West campus senior was named winner of the coveted D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) citizenship award. She is Janet Larkin, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C^rald Larkin. I The high flying McHenry Warriors kept their grip on first place in the North suburban with an 81-58 over the Cardunals of Dundee. Local families have the opportunity to share in an unusual Christmas gift this year by inviting a South American student to live with them. "Sharing your home and love with ,an exchange student eager to learn about America, can be a gift to enrich your life," states John Richardson, Jr., president of Youth for Un derstanding and former assistant secretary of state for Education and Cultural Affairs. "It is an opportunity to learn about another culture in a very personal way." « Youth for Understanding is a non-profit educational program that has exchanged over 75,000 teenagers worldwide since 1951. It is one of three high school student exchange programs recognized by the* In ternational Communication agency of the U.S. Depart ment of State. "The purpose of this program is to increase in ternational understanding through the family-living experience for young people and we are inviting families to share, the spirit of America with students from South America," said Mike Nagle, regional director of the Youth for Understanding International Student Ex change program. Students like Elsa Nieto of Colombia and Paulo de Mello of Brazil will be living with host families and at tending local high schools. Elsa is a serious piano student who also enjoys- playing the guitar- She has interests similar to American seventeen-year- olds, including tennis, volleyball,, dancing and reading. Elsa describes herself as Sincere, polite and' friendly. She would like to live with a host family in a small town and have a sister close to her own age. She has studied English and French for several years. Paulo is 15 and enjoys sports in his home town of Rio de Janerio. Basketball, soccer and volleyball are his favorites but he also likes siwmming and rowing. A four year student of English, Paulo also excels in math and art. He hopes to" Hv« with an active sports-'ininded family. Exchange students become members of their new families and have the same responsibilities and privileges as other children in the home. Maximum effort is made to match the students and families with similar interests. Host families for 800 students, who arrive in January for a six-month stay, arf needed before Dec.® 25 to insure school enrollment. Families in terested in participating in the program who care to contribute in this individual way to better understanding and friendship among Offer Figure Control At MCC Next Spring A third class in Figure Control has been added to the credit courses that will be taught during spring semester at McHenry County college. The class, which meets from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday evenings, will be taught by MCC Athletic Director Bob Franz. The Plaindealer was one of twelve Illinois weekly and daily newspapers to receive editorial awards from the association, according to an announcement made by President Charles B. Shuman. First place award carries with it a bronze plaque and a savings bond. Friends of twS former McHenry girls will be happy to learn that they are fast breaking into show business in California. The two are Nancy Nelson, 14, and her sister, Lou, 19, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Nelson of Temple City, formerly of Emerald Park. Their vocal gamut runs from western to popular to semi-classical and the girls have already done singing stints with such celebrities as Bob Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Johnny Ray, Sons of the Pioneers and many others. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 17, 1969) Sixteen Mexicans charged with entering this country illegally were discovered by sheriff's deputies while investigating a report of a stabbing. The men were found in the Barracks, Terra Cotta. All of them without legal documents, to allow Chinese Cards Chinese sheet-dice, dating back to the 10th Century, are believed to be the first "play ing cards." Others were de rived from Chinese paper money and it is though that some of the earliest card games were played with actual bank notes. „
