Edge Wauconda Cagers 63 To 61 By Randy Swikle Two important victories over the weekend improved the Johnsburg Skyhawk basketball record to 5-1, and the Skyhawks are now preparing for J another "double header" this weekend. Hononegah, the largest school in the Shark Con ference, was no match for the Skyhawks in Friday's contest at the Johnsburg gymnasium. The home squad massacred the visiting Indians in the first quarter and went on to win the game 86-65. The next night Johnsburg won a much closer victory at Wauconda 63-61. The Skyhawks couldn't seem to do anything wrong in the first quarter against Hononegah. ,At the first quarter buzzer the home squad had a comfortable 23-5 lead, brought about by ex cellent teamwork and superb ball handling. Johnsburg center Tom Schoenig was accurate on each of the five shots he took during the first quarter, and he made his only free throw attempt. Brett Zimbrick was also on target hitting three jump shots, and Chris Dixon and Rick Szumlas brought the Skyhawk fans to their feet with a spectacular exhibition of passing. Dixon himself had a dozen assists during the night. At halftime Johnsburg was on top of a 46-24 score. Zimbrick finished the evening as high point man for the Skyhawks with 22 points. Schoenig had 20 points, Dixon collected 13, and Kurt Valentin hit five baskets for 10 points. Frank Jakubicek sank seven for seven free throws and got nine points for the evening. Zimbrick also had a perfect percentage from the free throw line, making all four attempts. The 86-65 victory over the Shark Conference school was an important one for the Skyhawks, who lost tos Marengo by a single point a week earlier. Saturday night, Johnsburg didn't show quite the same style against Wauconda. The contest was close throughout the evening, and Johnsburg's big man, Schoenig, was held to a single basket and three free throws during the first half. Fortunately for the Skyhawks, more balanced scoring was achieved by Zimbrick and Szumlas, who had four Held goals apiece the first half, and by Dixon with three field goals. Schoenig finished as top scorer for the evening with 21 points. During the second half he connected on six of eight field goal attempts and four of six free throws. Zimbrick had 14 points, and Dixon and Szumlas each had 8. Friday night the Skyhawks take to the road and meet Beloit Catholic, which has an identical 5-1 record. Catholic is also 1-1 in the conference, having beaten Harvard and lost to Marengo. The Marengo Indians beat Catholic 75-58. On Saturday, the Skyhawks travel to Grant High School in Fox Lake. Grant's 24 Free Throws Beat Warriors 70-67 Coach Ken Ludwig defined it correctly, "you can't defense free throws". That was the whole ball game as the Warriors lost to an old rival Grant Saturday night by the score of 70 to 67. The Bulldogs out-shot the Warriors from the charity line 24 to 7 to gain the vic tory. With three regulars sitting out most of the game, the Warriors struggled, but couldn't quite overcome the gap and fell by the wayside, in a non-conference en counter on Saturday night. Playing perhaps their best one half of a game during the season, the Warriors with Johnson, Zeller and Jensen all hitting the hoop, jumped out to an early 20 to 17 lead at the end of the initial period. Still hitting the hoop and playing tough defense the Warriors led 40 to 35 at the intermisstion. With the above named in serious foul trouble, the Bulldogs taking advantage grabbed a 53 to 52 lead going into the final trouble, the Bulldogs taking advantage grabbed a 53 to 52 lead going into the final period. Although the lead exchanged hands several times, the Bulldogs managed to hang on and grab the win. The loss puts the Warriors at 4 and 2 for the season, with the Gators of Crystal Lake South here on Friday. The Wisconsin officials were not at their best on Saturday night. It seems that a different brand of ball is played in the state to the north, as it is in 111. Nevertheless, no one blames the officials for a loss, but the Grant five shot 38 freethrows, while our Warriors made 7 of 14. Group tran sportation. Here's a report from Bill and Pauline Pries on the recent get together of Florida McHenryites: November 28,1979 Dear Earl: On November 17th under bright and sunny skies, with t|ie temperature in the high 70's, % former McHenry, 111. residents gathered at Frank Howard park, Tarpon Springs, Fla. for their 5th Reunion. Many newcomers to the Florida area were greeted by their former neighbors and friends. The afternoon was spent reminiscing lots of past experiences and also learning of the growth, changes and progress for McHenry, 111. at the present time. Bill and Helen Sutton were the newest residents (5 days). Mrs. Tillie Bruce of Lighthouse Point, Fla. traveled the farthest to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hojnacki were the most recent grandparents. John Woodward received a small token ftfr having the least hair - a bottle of hair tonic. All present were most im pressed and interested with the booklets entitled, "McHenry, 111. A Town that has Everything"^ These were sent by Donald Doherty when Eleanor and Bill Creutz visited their son Ronald this past summer. Mr. and Mrs. William Pries and Mr. and Mrs. William Creutz were voted in once again to continue with the McHenry Day Reunions. The next reunion will be Saturday, April 12th, 1980 at the Frank Howard Park, Tarpon Springs, Fla. We are hoping for a very large turnout in April as there are now well over 200 people on the registry. Bill and Pauline Pries Wish I had been there to win that bottle of hair tonic. h OPTOMETRIST is hereby retiring from practice. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Montini Middle School The 7th grade Montini team beat Avon by a score of 58-18. The game was one sided after the 1st quarter by a score of 20-0 which gave our bench plenty of playing time. Scorers were Soctt Freund 19 pts., Roger Barrett and Jim Koleno 10 pts. each, Dave Zabielski had 7 pts., Steve Baldwin and Brian Truckenbrod 4 pts., and Brian Diedrich and John Norkett added 1 basket each. Our record then stood at 5-2 and 3-1 in conference. Our next game was at Round Lake where we defeated them by a score of 37-25. Falling behind early, 5-2, by the end of the 1st quarter it was Montini ahead 11-5 and by half it was 27-7. After 3 quarters it was 35-11. Round Lake came back in the 4th quarter when they came out pressing our replacements and we had trouble breaking it and they outscored us 14-2 the last quarter. With this victory we moved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in conference. Scoring went 18 pts. for Scott Freund, 7 pts. for Roger Barrett, and 2 each for Brian Deiedrich Mike Widhalm, John Norkett, Dave Zabielski, Jim Koleno and Brian Truckenbrod. . 1 Our game against Rich* mond was probably our most exciting game of the season so far. Down by a score of 21- 8 at half the determination of Montini's boys still showed. In the 3rd quarter Montini outscored them 11-10 closing the gap to 31-19, but the last quarter was an un forgettable one. With Rich mond starters still in, the gap was quickly shrinking until finally with 32 seconds left it looked like Montini had cut it to 2 on a basket by Scott' Freund, a late whistle was blown for traveling that nullified the basket. Montini outscored Richmond 12-4 the last quarter and finally lpst 35-31. Richmond remains^ undefeated. Our record is • now 6-3 and 4-2 in conference play. Scoring went 25 pts. for Scott Freund, 2 pts. for John Norkett and 4 pts. for Roger Barrett. *•- ' :v 1.4 N«w Every Day Law Price ALL CARTODI CIGARETTES /" One Low Price Popular Brands Plus 18 Soles »ax S4.87 BEN FRANKLIN 1250 N.
