Education, and Welfare HolMay Partying Hps- The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol ism has suggested a responsi ble approach to party-giving and party-going for this holi day season. For that matter, the approach is wise for any occasion when alcoholic bev erages are served. Here are some NIAAA guidelines on being a good host,, hostess, or guest: True hospitality involves much more than plying guests with food and drink. It is the obligation of the host and hostess to set the tone, direc tion, and pace of activity. Try something different. Instead of sending guests di rectly to the bar, try mixing people as they arrive. The warmth that comes from greeting old friends and meet ing new people may exceed the warmth stirred by a mar tini or a beer. Good conver sation is possible without a glass in hand. Alcohol should not dominate a conversation. There are ways to promote party success while keeping things under control: Select the bartender. Choose a bartender of known discretion. The eager volunteer may turn out to be a pusher who uses the role to give every glass an extra "shot." Pace the drinks. Serve drinks at regular, reason able intervals. The length of the intervals will de pend on whether the guests are enjoying the company more than the drinks. A drink-an-hour schedule means good company prevails. Don't double up. Many people count and pace their drinks. If you serve doubles, they'll be drink ing twice as much as they planned. Doubling up isn't hospitality; it's inconsiderate. Don't push drinks. Let the glass be empty before you offer a refill. And then don't rush, espe cially if someone comes up empty too fast. When a guest says "no thanks" to an alcoholic drink-- don't insist. • Push the snacks. Do this while your guests are drinking, not after. This is important because food slows down the rate at which alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream. It also slows the rate at which people drink. • Serve nonalcoholic drinks, too. One out of three adults chooses not to drink at all. Occa sional drinkers sometimes prefer not to. Offer a choice of drinks besides alcohol--fruit and vege table juices, tea, coffee, and soft drinks. And if anyone tries to sell you on the latest version of a so-called "cold cure," you can laugh it off and save your money. As the years go by more and more is being learned about colds and their causes. A number of viruses pro duced the symptoms that most of us call a cold, prob ably more than a hundred. The true cold is an infection with one or more viruses. Bacteria probably are purely secondary infections. Current research indicates that colds are harder to spread than had been thought. Fresh colds appear to be more contagious than older ones. Children's colds probably are more contagi ous than those of adults. There still is much discus- sion among experts as to the relationship of chilling or exposure to dampness to "catching" a cold. What can you do for a cold? No specific treatment, so far available, is effective. Treatment is directed toward relief of the discomfort of runny nose, watering eyes, sore throat, fever and other symptoms of the cold. Penicillin does not stop the virus, but may be prescribed by your physician for sec ondary bacterial infections. Your doctor will prescribe bed rest, or at least reduced physical activity. Medica tions to relieve headache and aching joints and to reduce fever can help. Antihista mines will curb runny nose. And after a couple of weeks, you'll be cured. Cold vaccines have yet to be proved of much value. There is no evidence that any particular foods, special clothing or exposure to sun light or fresh air will have any effect on colds. There has been some research which indicated that Vitamin C might help prevent or les sen colds, but the preponder ance of research evidence is that this product is of doubt ful value. • » * • The hardest task in life is to refuse to be tempted by false honors.
